My 2001 2.5 DSE's fan speed control DIAL has finally given up, stuck on a high setting (noisy). As you will also see the exterior temp is at -40, unreal since this evening it is +30. Both issues have been developing for a while now and ignored as they corrected themselves in a while, but no longer. The air con is also non functional but that is a separate issue I expect.

Suggestions anyone? as to the complexity of the problem.

Kyran

If the temp reading is -40 you might want to check that one of the wires on external temerature probe are not broken, as my one is. However, my fan speed does not turn off fully. Not sure if this is normal.

at LOW temp fan runs high, at 16 deg or above fan calms down a bit.
The system is set to run the fan at varying speeds dependant on comfort level and temp selected...in LO the fans run quickly until the interior temp reaches the preset level in the HEVAC unit...increasing the set temp to 16 will slow the fans a tad as it won't need as much forced air flow to achieve LO as it would to achieve 16.

As for the -40, that is more than likely a duff ambient air temp sensor (or wire there too) or maybe an internal fault to the HEVAC unit...diagnostics could reveal more!

Cheap to try is the IT solution: Disconnect the battery and let everything discharge, remember if you do it quickly after turning ignition off there's not much to reset after reconnecting.

It could also be that you need fault codes red/cleared.

This cured the minus reading on my 1995 but in the end had to replace the HEVAC unit as the speed control button gave up. (Could see someone had tried to repair it badly when I took it apart)

Thanks for the helpful suggestions. My daughters boss has a '98 and he has said his guy solved issues very quickly. I will be talking to him after weekend and am taking your ideas on board. I don't frequent this forum a lot, but the help and knowledge that is here about these vehicles that we love is impressive.

Thank you all.

DO NOT do this if your car has factory fitted sat nav - it will break it

Didn't know that about the nav, so assume that quite a few things to be done when battery has been disconnected and don't do as RAVE workshop manual says:
Service repair no - 86.15.01
NOTE: From ’96 MY, vehicles maybe fitted
with a back-up battery, the purpose of
which is to power the anti-theft alarm if the
main battery is disconnected. If the main vehicle
battery is to be removed it is essential to adopt
the following procedure before disconnecting the
terminals in order to prevent the alarm sounding:
1. Turn the starter switch ’on’ and then ’off’.
2. Disconnect the battery WITHIN 17 SECONDS

(if the battery is not disconnected within 17
seconds, the alarm will sound).

I have an extra little bit of paper in addition to my owners manual with the instructions on letting the sat-nav power down before disconnecting the battery.

Not that it helped as the previous owner had work done before selling and fried the sat-nav in the process. When I get it sorted out I'll be very paranoid about it and would make a point of powering down & unplugging the sat-nav safely before going anywhere near the battery terminals.
