Hello everyone I have a 200 tdi fitted to my range rover classic and have problem.
I have no oil pressure when engine running and the light gose off after starting but then comes on about 10 12 seconds later.
Oil gauge fitted.
I've heard that it could be my big end shells so was thinking of changing the oil pump and shells together with the engine still in.
What's your views and any tips
Thanks Rich

is it actually low pressure or poor switch

Doable, but far easier to do if you were to pull the engine out.

But what pressure are you getting at cranking and as the light goes out? I ask as the likelihood of the pressure building enough to extinguish the lamp then dropping off completely is slim, is there a chance that the bypass valve is stuck open?

Can this happen then?

I've had oil pressure relief valve springs fail and cause this issue, but only rarely .... worth checking before you need to do major repairs...

The symptom you describe is weird, but could be cause by the spring being broken, rather than simply not being a spring any more ...

Edited to add:- I agree that the switches are a common failure at this age, and sometimes spectacularly so - SWMBO's OSF wing won't be rusting away any time soon, that's for sure :D

Was think of buying a hole new pump as this part I think is included.
Guess I'm going to have to get very dirty

Yes, the small ball bearing is seated via spring and an excess of pressure pushes it back and allow the oil to return to the sump, if the spring has compressed and has not seated the ball then the oil will simply bypass the filter and return to sump, you'll need to remove the sump to get to the pump and remove it for inspection and cleaning.

Yep :D whole pump isn't a bad idea, as you'll have a known quantity - worth checking the spring in the old relief valve though - if only to confirm it was, or wasn't the cause ;)

Runs fine as it is but don't want to drive and run it till problem is sorted.
It's been sat for a while before I brought it.
Guy Said it was fine and was when picked it up
No reason not to trust the bloke as seems a genune guy and know him well

What was the oil like in the sump?

Have you changed it yet?

Can it be that being sat for a while has caused a little corrosion of the plunger and it is now stuck in the housing?

Yes good idea thanks for your help

No bother :) , but as as others have said ( above ) ... IF it has been stood for a while, it's entirely possible that the drilling the spring sits in is full of cr@p , or as also mentioned above corrosion ! ( whatever next - land rovers which corrode:eek: - say it ain't so :D ) - and just needs a clean ..... ( as you said - it'll be a dirty job ! )

Worth measuring the length of the spring and comparing it to the spec - any shorter and it needs to go in the bin !

Doubt a new spring is daft money in any event...:)

used to be a common mod on fords, in my yoof, to pack out the spring with a couple of washers or spacer to pre compress the spring.
