200 TDi Auto to Manual conversion

I have a '93 200 Tdi Auto with a broken gearbox. It lost drive but if left for a minute or two with the engine off it will drive upon restarting for a minute or so then loose drive again. I have checked the oil level, all ok. I am assuming that it will require a new gearbox, but as they are quite expensive was wondering whether it may be easier to find and fit a manual. Any advise welcome, either on the fault or the mod. Thanks
