hi and hello
ive bought a 300tdi auto engine and autobox out of a discovery 1 it came with a sackfull of wiring and ecu's, i want to set this up on a test bench and get it working before it gets transplanted into my project,
now the last 300 tdi i played with was a manual gearbox with one wire to the injector pump easy peasy this seems to have a whole load more being an auto, can anyone explain to me what its all doing and how to wire up a simple loom to just run the engine and box ?? or point me at any wiring diagrams that may be relevant

Its got an ECM to try and squeeze a bit more power out of the 300tdi. Cos it's auto.
Shouldn't be too difficult but I doubt you'll be able to test run it as it'll require inputs from all over the place, I expect, like speed sensor.
so the very best of British luck mate!!
Personally I'd junk the ECM etc and go back to a manual engine. Then increase the power of the engine in a normal fashion to "cope" with it being auto.
Others who know more about this will come on to help.

Have you done an internet search for manuals as there are loads out there for free and bedtime reading, ETM (electrical troubleshooting manuals) available for most models or RAVE would be a good source to start.

I really cant help anymore but will be interested in the coming response's.

hi yes i think there is most of the loom in the sack of lecktricty, i will get it all out at the weekend and take some pics
i have been seaching for wiring diagrams yes but i was always crap at hide and seek as a kid and havent got any better really,
i have found a few manuals but not the disco 1 auto version, everything else though lol, im sure i will stumble on it eventually
 
If you still got the manual engine and the pump is good, would be easier to transfer across and the wiring will be much simpler to let you check out the engine. No 4 injector is also different so it will also need to be changed over, possibly all of them actually. There are a lot of differences between manual and later autos. You would really need the whole loom as there's also a green ecu in the passenger footwell which has something to do with the immobiliser.

Do all 300 auto's have ECM
I thought early 300's didn't have it ?

Sadly, I know the EDC system rather more intimately than I would like to. The issue you will face at some point is that #4 injector will fail, and they are NLA.. :(

The "automatic engine" is a plain 300Tdi with a computer controlled FIP, a CKP and NLS in #4. ( fuel injection pump, crank position sensor & needle lift sensor ). The FIP works at a significantly higher pressure to gain more power (122 -v- 113) - but the injectors are thus higher pressure too - 280 Bar - they will not work with the "ordinary" VE FIP - the engine will run, but the fuelling will be way out.. so you'll need to change them too..

My 300Tdi factory auto (avatar) is de EDC'd, has a fully mechanical FIP, the right injectors, and a full width intercooler - It was then professionally tuned to 164 Hp - but the intake roar was intolerable, so it was then re-tuned / de-tuned to 146Hp, where is has sat for six years without issue. The AT cooler was also upgraded at the same time - it is 8 times the volume of the pathetic factory effort - the standard ZF4HP22 has stood this pain for 50K miles now, without issue..

I could go on, but you get the idea ...;);) :rolleyes: :D o_O

thank you for your insight, i dont think im going to need a lot of persuading to fit a manual pump and injectors it seems the sensible way to go,
how is the kickdown arranged with the EDC and then again when you fit a manual pump ?

oh and anyone got a manual pump and injectors for sale ?

There's a bracket on top of the EDC FIP, which takes the input from the throttle cable and connects it to the AT kick down cable thru a lever...

And, YES, that does mean that the engine throttle is done fly by wire, but the kick down is mechanical!! :rolleyes: ..

The original kickdown for the non EDC auto used the same concept, two brackets - but the brackets were on the rear of the FIP - when I did mine, I bought the brackets off LR - it was stupid money - but they do come up on eblag now.. :rolleyes: :mad: :rolleyes: - I have even found you some...

thank you for your help i appreciate it, i will probably buy those , my engine and box arnt here yet i was suppose to fetch it but its moved back a weekend so when i see what ive got i will decide what to do but the more l look at the wiring diagrams the more manual pump makes sense
 
"Complexity is the enemy of reliability" very good as so true i hate immobilizers they always pick on me to fail on lol
i will be asking questions on tuning the manual pump when i get one lol
