2.5TD 19j run away engine, help!

ive got a 1990 90 4c 2.5td and it randomly revs its tits off in first, lots of smoke, all colours.
air filter was full caked in oil, changed that.
whenever it happens i just wack it in 5th and stall it, still runs but seems to be happening more and more.
any help diagnosing would be great.

sounds like its running to destruction on its own oil

Next time it happens, just leave it and video it - would make a fantastic YouTube hit, trust me.

Seriously though, just rip it out and whack a 200 Tdi in there. It's the only real solution to the 19j to be honest.

Time to start looking for a new motor ( get the 200 ) . where is your breather going ? inlet or to atmoshere ? - if its to your inlet ( air filter ) remove it .
But defo new motor time .

take the pipe off from the turbo to manifold and stared it and see if much oil coming from the turbo if so its a turbo

Thanks for the help guys. Going to have a look for a not failed disco and rob it's lump. What sort of money am I looking at to do the swap?

You should be able to get a complete car for under £500. There's a few bits and pieces you might need extra (exhaust downpipe for example). But if you break the rest of the car, sell the good bits and scrap the remainder, there's a good chance you'll break even.
Failing that, for £250 or so, you can get a decent engine plus the bits and pieces you need - I went this way as I couldn't be bothered stripping the rest of the Disco and having to sell all the bits I didn't need. But I'm just lazy
