JM - I know this won't help our friend in question here - but what would you suggest is the best way of minimising GB failure other than regular filter and fluids??

No harsh acelration, braking carefully and well in time, into neutral or park at lights - any other tips??
hp24 has the strengthened parts that fail with torque of diesel ,what you suggest is best ,lr service intervals are pushed to be as long as possible for ease of service times cost at dealer and selling fleet cars with economic service costs

There are companies who rebuild HP22s with the stronger bits from the HP24s - Ashcroft engineering for instance.

yes a few can but not all bits as box dimensions are different because of differences but to be fair replacement of std parts gives long enough life

Ok. so replaced cooked fluid with dexron III. and now it slips between 2nd and 3rd rev go up a second or two before it changes into 3rd . has the clutch packs gone or going.

I had the flaring problem on mine on 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd shifts. Lucas Transmission Fix sorted it for 2K miles, it's just started flaring on 2nd to 3rd again.:( Ordered more snake oil to give me time to get the box out of my donor car.:)

Well bit the bullet. got a price for a second hand unit £300 + fitting £200 total £500 from emmotts of colne so hopefully back on the road tomorrow

Just a update been on phone to emmotts and he's just finishing putting everything back together so can pick it up in morning. He said somthing major serious has gone on the old box as there were loads of metal filling in the sump. So hopefully back on the road tomorrow. thanks for all your help

I've just had a rebuild with new clutch plates at £2500 and a 12/12 guarantee ( Mackie's of Glasgow.) You've done well at that price.
Box had been losing oil : I had tried transmission fix , oil /filter changes and eventually it spewed whole oil .
