Hi all. once again. i am in need of your knowledge . on our way back from hols yesterday and car was running fine, then we got to the road works on the m62 Leeds and after about five mins of that the gearbox just lost all drive and threw up all over the motorway . we managed to get it onto the hard sholder . when i looked under the bonnet i could see trans fluid coming out of the breather pipe. anyway got home on the back of a transporter and getting it back on the drive i started it up and it drove no pros. question is has the fluid just boilded or could it be somthing more serious.. many thanks to all you knowledgeable people
Steve

Sounds like a major overheat, the 96 does not have a cooling fan on the autobox oil cooler unlike the later ones. Maybe the oil was low to start with.
I suggest you change the oil and filter, ought to be done every 30K miles, and maybe add a fan to the oil cooler.

No there arnt any fags on the car . but i did change the filter and fluid. about 3000 miles ago. would it have done any major damage or is it just a case of replacing the fluid and fitting some fans to the cooler

When you changed the filter, did you get the "O" rings back correctly?
As to whether it has done damage, you can only wait and see.

Ok. so replaced cooked fluid with dexron III. and now it slips between 2nd and 3rd rev go up a second or two before it changes into 3rd . has the clutch packs gone or going.

Could be sticky valves....

Try some Lucas Transmission Fix - can get it off the Bay of E - it may stop the flaring after a coule of hundred miles

Do a site search on here for Lucas Transmission fix it has had some very good reports...

Yer never know yer luck it could free things up a bit...

JM - I know this won't help our friend in question here - but what would you suggest is the best way of minimising GB failure other than regular filter and fluids??

No harsh acelration, braking carefully and well in time, into neutral or park at lights - any other tips??
