The Bosch motronic system, or thor engine was introduced into the 1999 model.

The only way to check what engine is fitted into a 1999 model is to lift the bonnet & look.
1998 model will be the Gems engine. 2000 model year will be the Bosch Motronic/Thor.

I found this on another site,
There a 2 types of engine listed like this.
From January 1994 - September/October 1998 there was the GEMS (SAGEM) engine, which has the black rectangular box on top of the engine. After this period there is the Bosch engine.
So from Nov 98 it was the Thor/ Bosch, Motronic Engine Management System. (MEMS).
Does that sound right?

From MY99 it is the Bosch engine management system. The MY99 will probably have been introduced in late 1998,so as stated by others ,you will have to lift the bonnet and look for yourself.

The change date is Aug 1st 1998,this is the beginning of the 99my for LR,any petrol P38 with XA,YA,1A or 2A before the last six numbers in its vin will be Bosch Motronic injected.Apart from some NAS special edition ones from memory.
