Hello I'll be as clear as possible as I've only just got this 2 weeks ago.....I have a 1997 range rover p38 2.5 dse it at random times could be 1 mile or 100 5 mins or a week it is completly random....once it cuts out it won't start again for at least 6 hours just turns over but won't fire up pops up gearbox fault but diagnostic machines does not pick that up says crank shaft sensor....have replaced the crankshaft sensor and still no joy also replaced new alternator battery 4th injector and fuel filter test voltage of alternator and all seems fine at 14.4v am completely stuck with this and don't have a clue tried all fuses and relays in the bonnet all fine

At first thought my guess was crank sensor as I have had a similar experience but as you say you have changed it I am at a bit of a loss. Hopefully some of the wizards that are on this forum can provide some better help.
Good luck and if you do resolve it please post as it helps others.

Do some research on pouring cold water over the fuel injection pump....I am sure I have heard of a fault when it gets to hot it won't start....

Also, and this FAR MORE COMMON - as the timing chains stretch it alters the FIP timing enough that it struggles or fails to start when hot....proper fix is to re-time the FIP - bodge fix is a Hot Start Fix - research both options.

Hello thank you for your post I've tried starting while hot it doesn't seem I matter the temp it just won't fire absolutely confusing me

Hello no air in the pipes I will check the fuel cut off tomorrow as I havnt been to the car today other then that the only thing that springs to mind could be inmobalisor well maybe might have to look into bypassing it

Right there's power going to the fuel stop solanoid and also the temp sensor at the front cleaned them all off and still nothing

The sensor at the front of the head is not the green ECU temp sensor, that is between inlets three and four. Gearbox fault will come up if you coast to a halt when engine is stopped. Means nothing. Check function of lift pump.

As you have air in the clear pipe that is normally the bleed off pipes on the injectors leaking if you change them use good quality pipe and put heat shrink on the ends or cable ties helps to stop them giving trouble.

The mileage is 179k and there's no diesel flow through the filter witch is a new filter or into the injectors so I'm taking a guess that one of the pumps have packed up just determined what one.....but also if I force the car into limp mode and he car won't cut out

Drop the tank to do the lift pump and while its down check the brake pipes as if they haven't already been changed they probably need to be and don't go for the cheap lift pump iirc the one to go for is the VDO one .

If it has done 179k with the original FIP then that will be tired and more than likely on its way out. Sounds like your lift pump has gone first!

Hey guys just an update it's been seen by a machanic and been told there's a high resistance fault between crank shaft sensor and ecu advised on getting a new wiring loom not sure what could of caused this
