Is it possible to replace the little black box on the diesel injection pump with some sort of normal stop solenoid? Or is it possible to wire it directly to the ignition switch?

I've had a bit of a melt down of the vehicle wiring harness [due to an air con pump clutch electrical problem and the fuse didn't blow soon enough] and so I need to do a significant bit of rewiring [engine loom and under the dash] and am looking for a simple solution to get the engine going as I doubt I'll be able to ressurect all the immobiliser functions.

My disco does not have a spider unit behind the dash and I connot find an ECU, instead it seems to have a little black box bolted to the diesel injection pump where you would expect to see the stop solenoid.

This is not the same totally electronic injection pump unit as fitted to auto gearbox models [I believe that one has no throttle cable] as mine has a throttle cable, throttle position sensor [for EGR - which is disconnected] and this little black box with 3 wires to it [they look white, blue and brown] its bolted on where the stop solenoid is normally positioned.

I've looked every where and can find no ECU on the vehicle [only found EGR control unit, Window lift control unit and the radio receiver unit for the two button key fob - and I assume that receiver unit also acts as an immobiliser] so assume this little black box simply controls the stop solenoid on receipt of a voltage signal from ?, I know not where.

[If this mod is possible then I realise I'm probably going to have to make alternative arrangements for a wire to feed the starter solenoid.]

HELP

Yeah perfectly possible, running a live to solenoid off ignition or thru dash mounted switch-if you use switch make sure you cant accidentally knock it off when driving!!!
The solenoid is usually hidden under armour plating with anti-tamper screws, but once you get to it,just run a lead from the top to a switched live.-good luck

My 300TDi I had in Zimbabwe didn't have a black box on the pump, but then it didn't have a factory alarm system. There was just one wire direct to the solenoid, which effectively was fed from the key. I know as the connector failed while I was trying to overtake someone! Engine stopped with cars approaching fast!

The pump is a standard Bosch unit, used in several engines, so if you need to go back to a basic system, maybe a Bosch dealer can assist?

Cheers!

My wifes disco ( 300tdi last of the series 1) kept cutting out with no warning, and then start up again some time later. This kept getting more frequent untill 2 weeks ago it stopped for good. Much searching the fuel system and the web, led to the infamous spider, however just before I demolished the dashboard found some info indicating the last 2 years of the series 1 didn't have them, instead it has the immobiliser on the fuel solenoid. A little more research later and it was time to take it off. Make a tube ( i used copper ) that fits the 2 holes in the back of the black plastic, so that when you drill the bolts out the drill stays central on the bolt. We used a 90degree drill to get to them. Once they are drilled out, the whole unit comes off ( well with a bit of encouragement). Connect the purple wire from the lead that went into the immobilser to the solenoid ( youll need a ring connector) and away you go.

hi, im having the same problem on my R reg disco. does this little black box of tricks 'need' to be on the pump at all?
can it be done away with as mine is damaged?
thanks in advance.

no...

hack it off. the normal stop solenoid is behind it.

IIRC 3 wires go to the black box....one is an ignition live...use it to work the solenoid...ignore the other 2

I'll add....when I did it the box was coming off!! none of this pussying about with drills and stuff....hacked it to pieces with a big screw driver and a hammer so I had a clear view/access to the bolts.
