I need to chuck new tyres on all 4 corners but have no idea which ones to get.

I've read loads of tyre posts here, but most seem to be for off-roading or at least green laning, but mine is currently road use only.

The size on there at the mo are 195/80/R15, but they're all mismatched across the axels so I need to sort it sooner rather than later.

Do I need to be looking at 4x4/AT tyres, or would car tyres be ok for road use? I'm pretty clueless when it comes to tyres on the freelander

Hi,

You do not need A/T tyres which are designed for muddy tracks, nor would I suggest car tyres as the load rating is usually too low.

What you need are proper 4X4 road tyres - many are biased 80% road and 20% off-road which gives you great traction on lanes and in snow.

Make sure they are marked M+S on the sidewall.

You could choose from the size you have now which I would expect to have a load rating of 96H or a slightly bigger and wider, but also lower to compensate for that 205/70 15 which are also rated at 96H

Have a search and come back.

I know nothing about the Toyo Tranpath and can see no reviews of it.

I would expect it to be like other Toyos - a good bit noisier than most, pretty hard wearing -which usually means a bit less grip, and as I see it's classed as a summer tyre - it may not be the best choice for winter conditions.

The G-G UHP gets good reviews and should be OK. I see they are £80.12 on BlackCircles. I'm not sure about the wear rate on them - but someone who does know will no doubt be along soon.

Bear in mind that if you ask 10 people you will get 10 different answers - usually their particular favourite.

Having said that, I confess I would be going for my favourites - Continental 4X4 Contact - which I know to be quiet, great in the snow as well as the dry, and long lasting. They are £87.74 at the moment on Blackcircles just to compare. I've found them to be a good year round tyre.

Keep away from the budget cheapies as in an emergency, snow, ice, or greasy roads, they will not stop you in the same distance as the big name brands. They are cheap for a reason. What price safety??
