Have you ever broken down in the middle of nowhere, and fixed yer aircon with yer partners trollies, fixed yer radiator with a piece of bubble gum or made a camshaft out of a oaktree branch. Then heres the place to post it. land rovers are known to be repaired with basic tools in the middle of the desert with little of anything. I'd like to here your stories of what broke, where, and how you fixed it, and how long it lasted, perhaps we could share a larf and spread some more knowlege...Lets here it for the Rustic Engineers...:p

two full tubes of araldite slapped over the radiator when the engine and box jumped forwards and stuffed the fan through the rad. half way up the strezlecie track in souff astrailia. it wur still there when i sold the fokker in perth some three months later

Fuel pipe partialy blew off injector pump input and blasted 20litres of diesel away before i figured the strong smell of diesel was a bad thing.

Pulled into an industrial estate and had a look; it was a jolly nice fountain of diesel shooting 6feet into the air, and the engine bay got a nice rust proofing.

After some time, my friend arrived with some things to hopefully sort the problem. Then 5 minutes later a lightweight pulls up and stops, guy jumps out to see if he could help.

To sort the problem we stole the pushfit from the IP run off side, coupled the inputs back up, he then cut out of his land rover a piece of fuel pipe, which fit nicly over the 2 now uncoupled pipes. Job done, and have not looked back. Works a treat. Thats what I call service.

4 months later found a spare pushfit connector in the dash board!

Well.

Got a bit carried away with my old Discovery a few years ago and snapped the nearside steering arm !!!!!!!!

So i nicked the exhaust clamps and bolted them around the arm with a socket set extension arm in between to stiffen and keep the 2 ends together ~ Drove 30 miles and nearly got home before the exhaust started blowing !!!!!!!

I now belong to the RAC !!!!!!!:D

Struth retsgom thats a bodge and a half I take it that was a gentle scarry drive home on a wing and a prayer...:D
I bought a car once towed it home wilst pushing it onto my drive the suspention collapsed on the front prev owner put no nuts on the bolts we just towed it 5 miles through town traffic...lucky or what:eek:

I once wired the throttle full on on a motorcycle when the cable broke
and drove it home 20 Miles blipping the engine kill switch.

I have also used a length of flat twin and earth (Household wiring) as a replacement spark plug lead.

And I still use this one.
If I go to the local motor factors for washers they sell me 20 pressed steel washers for a Pound.
So my bodg is too drill holes in coins (you get 100 for a pound or 50 of the big ones) and use them.
They have the advantage of not rusting and you set the hole to any size you like.
Also you can use up all the Foreign coins you came back from Benedorm with.
:D
Yes it did smell

i knew someone that had a friend who's nextdoor neighbours second cousin twice removed, once fixed the collapsed suspension on an austin princess with, a bit of fence post hammered in the front and a bit of broken slab wedged in the back, before taking it to the auction.

I once manufactured a woodruff key out of old nails found on the side of the road to replace one that had sheared on the alternator of my mums car in the middle of Dartmore.
And yes it was cold, dark and wet.
Remember the old floorboard nails they even look like woodruf keys, Most cars only break down when its cold and wet in the middle of nowhere...good one though clivees...:D

A friend of mine wanted to lower his suspension so instead of buying a kit he removed each coil spring cut through one side then he twisted them toether in a inter-locking design then welded them a mig set.

He did that with 4 different cars he owned. Oddley enough though it didn't pass the MOT with that suspension on.

why bother with all that hassel? just heat the spring up,the spring will then start to collapse, when it drops to the required height stop heating it.
