Hi all, this is my first post.
I bought a 2003 Freelander TD4 ES last week, it was fine for about 200 miles and has now developed a fault. I took the wife to work which is about a 10 mile round trip, then about a mile from home I had severe engine power loss, as if I was running on half the cylinders. There was no coughing, spluttering or complaining it was just like someone turning off a light switch, instant. I tried again this morning by doing similar mileage and the same thing happened, it seems fine when its cold. My wife took it out again this afternoon and the same happened, 9-10 miles then the power loss. I took my son out about 15 mins after she got back and it set off fine, but after a mile it struck again. Interestingly I had to go up a hill so I left it in 3rd and floored it trying to blow out any cobwebs, it didnt like that at all, in fact it just shut down, instantly.

Any ideas what I might be up against, I haven't looked at the garage fine print in the warranty yet so I'm hoping its nothing major.

I appreciate any advice or suggestions

Steve

were there any other symptoms, like engine management light come on?did any dials on the dash die?...

When power loss happens there is no indication in the dash that something has been 'flagged', it just drives on but with less power. As regards the last incident where it just stopped dead, I cant remember whether the ignition lights were on or off as I had to coast to the kerbside quickly, it did start again within a few seconds though.

The wife is hoping to use it tomorrow to do a 200 mile round trip but unless I can find a quick fix/cure/guess that looking a bit remote.

Regards
Steve

Take it back to the garage and tell/show them the symptoms. Suggest that they check both low pressure fuel pumps, one in the tank and one under the bonnet by the fuel filter. Usually the in tank pump fails first followed quickly by underbonnet one. Both are common failures from around 80k onward. Both pumps should be heard running/priming when the ignition is first turned on. Underbonnet pump often gets noisier when intank pump stops working.

As it's a 2003 model, it might have just the single lift pump behind the rear wheelarch.

I'm not sure about any possible crossover chromie but I thought the change to the underarch pump corresponded with introduction of the facelift model.
