Brother in law has a 2001 Td4 . Friday evening he came home , Freelander running fine , half an hour later wouldn't start - said it was turning over but no go .
Sat morning I started it with jump leads ( thought there was a big current draw when switched on) ran OK Sat and Sun .
Going to work this morning seemed to lose power a few times and then cut out altogether . Had it recovered to my place - trying to get it scanned but no luck so far.
Have seen fuel pump mentioned on a few occasions as a problem on these - but Haynes mentions 2 fuel pumps , one in the engine bay and one in the tank.
Would the symptoms make any sense to anyone on here in the absence of a scan .( in tank pump €388 + 21% VAT)
On Sat there was a sort of buzzing noise from engine area - like a relay etc but couldn't pin it down .

thump the one in the engine wiff a hammer and see if it starts it. . . . .its bin well documented in LZ go into search :) :) :)

Turn on ignition but don't crank engine. You should hear the in-tank pump 'priming' (under rear seats) for a few seconds. If there is no sound then investigate the possibility of a loose connection or a faulty pump. Search forum archives as there is lots of good info about this sort of problem. D..

Seems to be a noise coming from the back when switched on - that would suggest the in -tank pump is working .
Was going to give a few thumps to pump in engine bay but battery went dead so took that out to recharge it .
A friend of mine is calling tomorrow to see what he can find out using a Launch - he has had the equipment for a few years and is well used to it but he hasn't actually used it on a Freelander Td4 so isn't sure how successful it will be .
The owner doesn't ever recall changing the fuel filter - having owned it for about 3 yrs now . From some posts I see it's located in the wheel arch and very hard to change .
Could the fuel filter cause the problem - if it has become blocked ?

The secondary fuel pump and filter were moved in 2003 from the engine bay to just inboard and forward of the O/S rear wheel. Yours filter will therefore be in the engine bay on the N/S wing valence.
If the fuel pressure sensor finds low pressure it will prevent the engine from running to protect the HP engine driven pump from failure by cavitation.
Seeing that your engine had run your symptons suggest that it may be an injector leak-off problem where at low cranking revs the HP pump cannot deliver sufficient pressure to open any of the injectors. (one of the disadvantages of common rail injection). There have been several threads describing the simple procedure on how to determine if this is the case. (See Testing Injectors posted by Sniffert 07 Nov.)

The Freelander is a 2001 model so I presume the pump is in the engine bay and therefore the filter would be in/over the rear wheelarch ?
Got it scanned today and am going out now to have a chat with the guy who scanned it - told me on the phone there were quite a few faults stored so will report back (and require more assistance naturally ).

P1260 -Pre-fuel pressure control .
P1190 - Fuel rail pressure plausibility .
Any ideas what these point to ?
Going to change the fuel filter tomorrow to eliminate that for starters .

Changed the fuel filter tonight - took a long time as the old filter would not come out of the housing and I eventually had to remove the housing ( including fuel pump ) from the car . I then got the old filter out using a chain grips .
When I put the filter and housing back I didn't connect the wiring plug to the pump in the engine bay .I wanted to see if the rear in-tank pump was working . When I switched on - nothing happened .
Would this point to a failed in-tank pump ? Should I check if there is power going back to the pump before condemning it ?
The local main dlr has quoted €388 + 21% Vat for a pump so naturally I would like to be as sure as possible that the pump needs changing .
Any advice or suggestions gratefully accepted .

Had same thing, just got the pump from motor factors, 200 euro, but found on another web site 123 sterling. I am in Republic as well so its much cheaper to go to factors here rather than buying whole unit from dealers. I sent you a pm with the web address.
