Oil change due - top tips?

Going to change me oil and filters shortly, got filter kit ordered from Paddocks. Last time I did it I made a right mess, got oil everywhere mainly when I removed the filter. Sine then I remember reading a load of tips 'n tricks posted here a couple of months ago but I can't find the post.:doh: I can remember that Biglad Dave had what I thought was a great tip for not spilling oil whilst removing the filter but I can't remember what it was! Help anyone?

Err... drain the engine before trying to remove the filter with the engine running???

dont forget to drain the oil when its warm

I think the big lad's tip was to loosen the filter the place a large plastic bag over the filter and then unscrew it.

That rings a bell thanks Discool - the last time I did it I tried to balance a small bowl under it but it fell off.......

Hi sp33der, what I use is a 2ltr plastic ice cream tub. This works very well as it catches everything and can be jammed in place so it doesn't fall.

As others have said get everything warm so that the oils will run easily.

Funnily enought I've just done the engine and axles on my new car this afternoon and NO spills anywhere, even when doing the fuel filter !!!

Are you going to do all the oils? Eg engine, gearboxes and axles? If you are, may I reccomend you to get a 500ml syringe or simlar. I bought one at a hardware shop and it cost 16 euros and is worth every cent. All the oils going in - actually go in !!!!

When you've replaced all the oils your car will thank you for it and run smoother, more economically and more reliably.

Don't waste time reading this, go and do it !!!!

great tip about the syringe, its how i did all my axle oils and barely a drop spilled. do get odd looks when you walk into a chemist and ask for the biggest syringe they have tho, specially being a scouser with a skinhead

as for not spilling oil - i have a top tip that i learned just this morning ...... DONT DROP THE OIL FILTER!! all was going well and my drip trays and cans had caught 99.9% of the oil (apart from a few bits that splashed off the steering rod thingy) so onto the filter, unscrewing it and catching all the oil, then SLIP. oil fookin EVERYWHERE!!

il remember that for the future. luckily had some jizer left so sprayed loads of that on it then drained me coolant onto it to wash it away.

i bought a oil change pan from draper.The money it cost can be recouped agaisnt jet washing the drive with fairy.

Cheaper and easier to use is a concrete mixing tray from HomeBase/B&Q/Wickes etc. fits nicely between the axles catches everything including dropped oil filters. Stills needs the washing up bowl from the kitchen to catch the oil. but if you miss the bowl or drop owt It'll save ya drive no probs. Also great for leaving under the engine to catch the drips while it's parked up.

I used one of those pumps to drain the oil from the dipstick hole, plastic bag round the filter and job done. I know some people will say you get more oil out draining via the sump but if I'm changing the oil every 3000 miles the half a cup full left in there wont make any long term difference... well thats my thinking anyway

Thanks folks- I think I'll go with the 2L ice cream tub yum yum! Now we know why he's the Bag Lad......all those oil changes are making him put on weight! :-D

Use a big contaner to put the oil in as it comes aout at some speed. also leave the oil filler cap on it gives you more control over the speed the oil comes out

I read on anouther forum that a trick to do as an engine flush was to fill the engine block up with diesel and run it for about 10 minutes then drain the diesel out. I myself have never tried it on any car but just wondering if anyone has tried it on there landy?

If you fill your engine with diesel and run it you are likely to hydraulic lock it.
