More HGF stuff

So if im losing coolant does it definately mean HGF?No build up of mayon on filler cap, no emulsifing of the oil-but the expoansion tank does have a petrol smell about it.Also whats the wosrt bthat could happen if i keep an eye on the temp on coolant levels?

Have you run a compression test? that might help identify head gasket problem. My Rangie uses a bit of water but as far as I know this is because I have a weeping core plug. You might want to have a good look underneath and see if you have the same problem.

I assume your radiator is O.K. but it is difficult to see with it still in the car, you might want to take the rad out and thoroughly clean it and give it a good check over.

Apart from that I have no idea!!

Afraid so. It's a job I keep putting off. As far as I know the engine has to come out to replace the core plugs (they cost 27p each!!). I have heard that it might be possible to jack the engine off the crank pulley, remove the engine mount and gain access to the rear core plug (exhaust and manifold removed) and this is very tempting but I can't help wondering if there is a risk that 1: you could damage the crank and/or pulley, and 2: how stable it would be on a jack or an axle stand. if I ever get round to it, I'll put a post on here.

Might be doable with one of them transmission mounts but wouldnt wanna do it with just a axle stand

i would get it tested for hgf/hydrocarbons in coolant first then you can asses the situation and fix it in good time and fix the problem.

also take the oil filler nozzle out of the rocker cover and wipe your finger on the inside of the rocker cover. mine had clean oil but the rockers were gunked up. also have a look inside the breather pipes!
