Hi,

I have a 1991 Defender 2.5 petrol and was wondering what level the coolant should be at? It has the original brass black expansion tank (see photo) and for the life of me I cannot see an indicator level of any kind on the tank itself, there’s no marker or ‘post’ on the inside that I can see? Any idea on level would be hugely appreciated.

I’m also after a Haynes manual or similar to purchase for the 2.5 petrol if anyone has any links, all I can find are diesel ones?

Thanks

Thanks!

I imagine I’m going to be on here quite a bit!

It’s a Defender 90 County, very original and solid underneath. Door bottoms are a bit shot but will do for now and she’s a tad oily underneath but that’s normal right!

Drove her back 180 miles from Norwich at about 50mph and loved every minute of it!!!

Fill 1/2 full to the seam.. squeeze the bottom pipe from the rad to make sure the water moves.
After a big drive check level when cools & then keep an eye on it.
Any excess will have been pushed out the cap & down that little pipe below it(just incase you wonder what the puddle of water is)

Treat that as the level
Enjoy the new motor

I think mines been sitting at about 1/3 full, I never topped it up properly after replacing the thermostat. Temps sit nicely just below the half way mark on the gauge, rad hoses nice and hot... all is good!

As for the manuals, I got one of the big workshop manuals with my 110, 83-92 I think it is, it seems to cover almost everything. There's sections in there for the 2.5 petrol engine, and also 2.25, I guess they're an even rarer beast in a 90/110. I haven't needed a haynes manual so far with this and Youtube.

Enjoy your 90 though, it looks quite tidy!
