Usually if the pump has been retimed it's because of stretched chains.Have you got a stethoscope or a long screwdriver you can use to locate where the rattling is coming from?Spoke to a firm called feather diesel in Halifax who advised me it’s probably a worn pump that’s been timed incorrectly to account for whatever’s worn.
Gonna check the modulation later tonight on the nanocom just to see where it’s at and update on here.

This is what I’ve been trying to decide for all this time if it was the pump or the chain but there’s no easy way to find out hence my post to dive in with the chain.

They can sound like a bag of nails if the modulation is way out.
Regards your starting problem I would be checking glow plugs first. That they all have power and are working and most important they are NOT the cheap china copies . You need Beru, GKN other folk will give you some makes as well. I had the china ones in and murder to start in cold weather, changed to GKN and starts first timeNo error codes but I’ll check again tonight and doesn’t sound too horrible when on but I’ll check with the nanocom.
