Freelander 2 (LR2) Some advice needed

Sorry for the long post but here goes, was initially in the welcome section but hopefully gets a bit more notice in here.

I've had an 07 Freelander 2 for a few years now but unfortunately while driving home it went into a weird limp mode.I
I managed to get it home and called the AA just so they would come out and scan the ECU and they found 4 errors.
Patrol found the following fault code/s:System : Engine control - 57Y / Diesel EDC 16CP39 Status :

P0489 - Exhaust gas recirculation control. Error Message : Malfunction. Error static. Status

P042E - Exhaust gas recirculation control. Error Message : Malfunction. Fault pending. Status

P0380 - Glow plug/heater circuit (A). Error Message : Malfunction. Error static. Status

P1298 - Internal control module Fuel injection. Error Message : Malfunction. Error static.
Advise to take to garage asap
Engine Oil Level Ok. Coolant Level Ok.
Local garage have quoted £700ish for new EGR valve supplied and fitted with a chance of the new EGR clearing the other error codes.

So what do I do now, could someone kindly point out where the EGR valve is ? If it's accessible I may fancy getting the spanners out, sorry for the long 1st post.
 
static error messages are just that - there to stay
Pending means its not so serious and the ecu is waiting for 3 to occur in 3 consecutive trips before flagging a fault

The glow plug one would not be a concern unless it is hard to start on a cold day
EGR is a concern but
The show stopper for me is P1298 i would start there

to suggest an EGR swap is barking at codes in my opinion

also i assume it is a TD4?

Correct it is a TD4,

The reason of P1298 OBD-II Engine Trouble Code is Manifold Absolute Pressure/Barometric Pressure Circuit High Input.


could be down to the EGR then but rather than £700 i would be trying mr muscle or a carbon clean maybe?
I would suggest a blank mod but that is now an MOT fail if detected.

I agree with SWalker above.
The EGR stuff is likely a red herring, but they are known to go wrong, but cost nothing like £700 to replace. The EGR valve assembly is under £100 and takes about an hour or so to install. You can also fit an EGR blanking plate, to prevent a stuck EGR valve from passing exhaust gasses continuously.

P1298 is more interesting, and not so easy to sort. The injector driver is part of the ECM, which if faulty, would need replacing and configuring to the vehicle.

I did this very thing to my FL2, but for a different reason. I used a Mongoose lead from China, and a copy (probably cloned) of JLR SDD, which allowed me to replace and configure a second hand ECM in about 30 minutes.

Definitely more investigation is needed, than simply paying over the odds to replace something unnecessary.

That's interesting. Where did you find that?

That means it could well be a sticking EGR valve, causing higher manifold pressure than anticipated.

I'd be fitting an EGR blanking plate, as they're almost undetectable at MOT time.

If you are anything like me i dont take it as fact until i have seen it myself or read about it in several independent places.

I tend to use the LR codes as a guide, but am also aware that sometimes TCs lead you up the wrong path, especially as manufacturers don't always seem to know what can cause all codes.:confused:

These have barometric sensor in ecu? like my old s-type Jaguar and when it gets shot, new ecu?

I'm not sure but wasn't the Landrover assembled from Volvo, Ford and Jaguar so I wouldn't be surprised if parts are interchangeable
 
Yep, time to start clearing out 17 years of sticky oily carbon deposits probably, specs of which you will not notice on your cloths and shoes, but you will when they fall on your carpet.

However, are some of these codes historic? Having cleared the codes, did the engine then run properly and were the codes then read again to see what are current codes?

I'm not sure if the codes are new or not, it's the first time it's gone into limp mode but turning the engine off and waiting 5 minutes seemed to get me going enough to get home.

I'm waiting for a scanner to turn up, so I will clear the codes and see if there's any improvement, on a side note it's never really been that efficient only ever averaged around 25mpg and a max of 40mpg on a decent motorway run.

After I've cleared the codes I'm planning a run up the motorway to see if I can clear any deposits out. Under heavy acceleration in 2nd I do see a plume of black smoke but it disappears, it will rev virtually all the way 6000rpm so it's not holding back but just doesn't seem right.
