This might sound dumb, but i honestly dont know!

I have been looking for a radiator for my v8 conversion (defender 90 200tdi to v8) i have seen the allisport one with the 2 oil coolers and was wondering,

Is it oil or water that goes through the cooler?

Two oil coolers? My V8 has one build into the radiator as fitted from the factory, plus a stand-alone cooler for the auto box.

The factory radiators have one for the engine oil cooler, the allisport radiators have the option of 2 so you can plumb in to the gearbox

Slight side-track...is an engine oil cooler generally needed or is it more a requirement for towing and heavy off roading?
I have an autobox oil cooler on my V8 conversion (90 + ex Disco 3.5V8 Efi + ZF4HP22) and standard rad with Kenlow fan but no engine oil cooler Temperature stays steady on long fast runs, slow traffic and idling. I don't tow and off roading is gentle laning at most.
Thanks.

Depending on the year and transmission the radiator could have two oil coolers. My '91 RRC has two oil coolers in the rad. Drivers side cools engine oil, other side does the auto transmission fluid then the third oil cooler (bog brush) in front of the rad and A/C condenser does the power steering fluid.

New radiators are quite expensive, even getting a recore is not cheap because there is not much demand for the big radiator cores used in these radiators. I had mine recored not long ago, it was more than I expected cost wise but certainly cheaper than a new rad. You also need to check which pipes you have because the spigots on the radiator are different because there was a change in the pipes used. On the '91 RRC the pipes have a domed end, similar to a bid double flare, my later '93 one has square cut pipe ends that have "o" rings. The radiaors are not interchangeable because of the difference in the pipe fittings. HTH

My series conversion used to be a 200TDI conversion and I kept the 200TDI rad when I put the V8 in with the oil cooler hooked up via a remote filter. Seems to work ok but don't notice much difference even when trialing off road. Pipes were knocked up by Pirtec

yes coolant in rad g/box oil through one side engine oil the other

Don't suppose you've ever opened one up to see how the oil is kept away from the coolant?
I’m a fabricator/welder and am pretty confident of being able to make my own radiator up with integral oil coolers.
