Ive already got a spare which is GKN and has a grease nip unlike the LR.

On further inspection my gearbox mounts are quite heavily worn resulting in a fair bit of movement around the GB/TX box which cant have helped.

Im wondering if the LSD has anything to do with it.

Going to replace the badly worn UJ this weekend, GB mounts and such will be done with the new TX box/Clutch work. Ill give it 6 months and see whats happens. If the UJs are worn again it must be down to the lift and or the LSD and thus needs a wide angle prop!
 
I'd suggest better grease :) - I use Castrol Pyroplex Red as a minimum in everything - if this doesn't do it, then I move up to Pyro Blue.... I'd also suggest you grease the joints before and after any serious off roading, and before any serious heavy work like heavy towing or high speed M-way - grease is cheap, relatively.....

I stopped using "ordinary" grease years ago, and haven't had any problems since.

There are better greases out there than the Red or Blue - BUT - they could be too good o_O - needle rollers require a certain amount of adhesion within the lubrication to make them rotate ..... if they don't rotate, they will fail in short order :eek: ..... :rolleyes:

Yup. Force the old grease out and new grease in.

Never had this issue on my 90 (less kf a lift, no lsd) Changed the UJs for GKNs when the originals failed and they where greased every 4 months or so (less driving) and never had an issue.
 
Gotcha. Think last grease I used was JCB blue

IIRC, this is similar to Castrol Pyro Blue - BUT .... it's worth checking as it may simply be too good for the job at hand.

( FFS - you couldn't make this sh*t up :rolleyes: grease which is too slippy :eek: - I think it's called "fretting" when the needle rollers don't rotate - they simply move a little one way, and then a little the other way - as such, visual examination should reveal that they are now oval, and not round ..... of course, once they gain any percentage ovality - they sure as hell do NOT go round at all, ever :rolleyes: :confused::eek:o_O )

I use Pyro blue on very high power PTO shafts on agri eqipment - by high power, I mean well over 100HP through any given UJ ( forage harvesters )

Castrol technical are bl@@dy brilliant IME - worth a phone call :)

As a heavy plant operator I can weigh in from personal experience, we have 2 basic types of grease on site, one a multi purpose lithium2 based grease and a EP (extreme pressure) moly grease, dumper drivers were not to touch the moly grease and were reprimanded for doing so for that exact reason, they greased the prop shaft UJs with the moly grease and is stead of rolling they would glide on the grease but then heat and "frett", the EP moly was only to be used by the excavators as it is a slow speed but high pressure application which it is designed to work perfectly in where as the UJs are a high speed but relatively low pressure application.

I think you can get the same Morris Lubricants lithium grease as I use from any motorfactors and maybe even Halfords but I'm not 100% on that.

From memory that is the same reason you should try your best not to let swivel hub CV grease get into your bearings and diff oil as it has a high percentage molybdenum in it which is the main additive in the EP "moly" grease, it is also an additive that goes into some engine oil additives as it helps the gliding of friction surfaces like engine components where there are no rotating bearings as such but components that glide round on a film of oil.

Marine grease is ideal for UJ's IMO..

I usually pull the UJ's apart old or new and pack them manually..

Marine grease is water RESISTANT so ideal for offroad conditions.

I find lithium grease just disappears and/or turns to shít when exposed to any amount of water.. ;)

Yes but the idea behind most maintenance regimes is routine preventative maintenance which would include prop shaft greasing every 50 hrs which is about once a week.

If high speed motorway work is part of the driving regime then that is some pretty intense use considering that 285/75 r16 tyres are +/- 33" and with 3.54 R&Ps turn almost 2200 times per mile, so the addition of speed and distance into the equation along with the increased pressure on them from a less direct line of drive as a result of a suspension lift and that is a serious work out for UJs.

Grease is cheap, very cheap when compared to good quality UJs and the time it takes to change them, I try to put a price on my time when it comes to things like this as it encourages me to keep on top of the maintenance ;)
 
Fitted the LOF POWERspring today. I always forget how much i hate fitting these. However well worth it.

As stated it is almost half the weight of the Britpart/Bearmach pedal assist spring! I was sceptical about the claims but Luke does produce some quality products. The claims are correct. It does drop the weight by almost half! Going from the standard long spring to this would be an even better feeling!

Had a cracking weekend in Salisbury with the lads. My 110 does do damn well, 400 miles for work in a week, 120 miles to Salisbury followed by 2 days of driving though 1 - 2ft deep muddy water and everything else Salisbury could through at it. Drove back with a minor ABS fault. Even if the 110 did almost become a submarine o_Oo_O

The ole girl is somewhat clean now, ready for another week at work.

I'll get a few pics and vids up here later but all on instagram if you want to see now :)

Was a very wet weekend!

They are very hot on the illegal offroading now, we where stopped twice by the MoD security, reg recorded and the like. Very nice people but clearly sick of people being dicks (which we saw a few)
