It seems of late I am forever in the damn chancellors forcourt. Today I put in another £70 after only covering 310 miles. In the mileage the needle started as FULL, right up to the neck (motorcyclists nightmare). It fell to just below half.

Is this normal, or do I need to change my style of driving, or move to Norfolk where there aint no hills

would a EGR removal improove this, and wot are the MOT implications?

It will use more just because its cold, i've noticed mine is using a bit more.
I blanked off the EGR and that improved the mpg greatly. But in this recent coldish spell, and doing quite a few short journeys the mpg has gone down.
Aircon, lights anything that increases the load, reduces the mpg.

Bear in mind the aerodynamics and engine efficiency - on a motorway run the optimum speed seems to be about 60 (put it on cruise and follow the trucks - surprisingly restful). Anything more really pushes up the consumption.

Find a local manufacturer of Bio-diesel (see multiple threads on this site) and use up to a 50% mix. Currently costs about 90-95p a litre.:)

Thank you for the replies, got a guy quoting £90 to remove EGR system, and flush the intercooler out. Seems the right way to go I guess for optimum fuel efficiency, would'nt you all agree

In July, my TD5 Disco on cruise at 56-ish mph did 417 miles on less than half a tank of diesel. I worked it out as a lot more than 40 mpg, and on the whole trip nearly 1,000 miles it was well over 35 mpg.

The secret is modest speeds, cruise control all the way, and patience. You'll get there just the same, and not a lot later than the boy racers.

A rough calculation of £70 of fuel for 310 miles works out about 20 mpg - something is not right there, unless you mean that your tank was still half full, in which case thats good going.

Worst mpg I ever had (manual TD5) was 23mpg when towing a caravan on mainly A and B roads, usually its around 30mpg.

I reckon I get about 23-25 from my TD5, but I had it chipped, so it goes like stink and it's forever tempting to boot it!

Fitting and EGR blank is very simple, flushing the intercooler is a marginal difference for big amounts of time and effort to get it out. I did mine at 85k, worth doing I would say, but I was replacing a punctured radiator at the time!

I'm averaging ~31 mpg overall. Goes down slightly in winter, or when towing. Been the same over 117k miles, and 5-and-a-half years from new (2002 TD5).
Check all the usuals (tyre pressure, regular service incl air filter, remove roofrack etc, and cruise at 60-65mpg, don't use mud tyres on tarmac) and should be similar unless there's something wrong. I don't use the Disco in town often...

Mine's on about 23 at the moment, but that's mainly cold around town. On long journeys I get about 23 at 80mph, and about 35 at 60mph. Slightly better abroad - it's suggested their diesel may be a bit better. Mine's an auto, unmodified, so yours should do better.

Hi all, I'm new to this site, so apploigies if I step out of any lines !!

I have a 04 Discovery 2 TD5, one of the last to be made, and some say the last of the 'real' LR Disco's
It regulary hits 30+, I drive steadily on motorways, normally about 62-65 on cruise, and make sure it's serviced regular (do all myself as LR dearlers are rip off's) it's covered 90k+ from new and is simply superb !!!!
I also off road as and when, although it's still too shiney to do the 'serious' stuff yet !
Cheers, Steve.

I had half a tank on the gauge when I re-filled. I now have a full tank, and will moniter how quick it goes by being driven carefully. wot mileage am I looking at for half a tank, or a full tank

is there anything i should be looking out for that may be reducing the economy. Mine ma be normal, but really want the Beast running as it should. Had a major service 2k ago, includung fuel and air filter so that system is ok.

No fuel leaks anywhere either. Guess its the EGR blanking route for me

just done a mpg calculation on the web, it was £50 of diesel (checked visa receipt), @ £1.07 per litre (poxy chancellor), covering 310 miles.

Site calculated 30.44 mpg. Guess thats about right for this vehicle

Yeah, and I probably die from boredom too. Funny how you HGV drivers moan your arse off about speed limiters one minute then quote the driving like a nun experience the next. If you can't afford to put the juice in it, don't drive it.

Rob

PS. Merry f'kin chistmas.

Well well, and a merry christmas to you too!

Just did a trip of 110 miles each way in the Disco TD5. Started out with a full tank. Parked back home 220 miles later still showing over three-quarters full.

I knew that would make you very happy.

Oh yes, and I can afford to put the juice in just like I can afford to do just about anything I want to do, but I got this way by not being a WASTER.

Waste it today. Do without it tomorrrow.

I agree with that estimate. I wonder what his MPG really is?
What on earth can he be doing to get a TD5 that bad, if it is?
If his tank was still half full, then maybe he used 9 gallons or so to do 310 miles, thus about 34 miles per gallon, which is more like the idea.

On Tuesday I filled my TD5 Disco to the brim (pump cut-out actually) and drove 110 miles to escape Christmas. 60-ish miles motorway, the rest on little country roads. Today drove the same route back home.
220 miles, and the fuel gauge is now showing clear over three-quarters, even after switching off and starting up again later.

There's little doubt it is doing well over FORTY miles to a gallon.

It isn't bad for over two tons of brick-shaped metal.

That's two tons of (I suspect) very well-cared for and carefully tuned metal CharlesY. Even so, even a rubbish driver like me can't get it below 23mpg, and mine's an auto. No-one has stated the obvious (unless I blinked) - that you can't trust your gauge to really mean half full when it sayso. The only way is to brim it and note the mileage each time. I do this and mine's between 23-24 on average around town driving, but I can make it 35 on a run.

On the subject of driving slowly, I used to be a speed king as well, at least up to that one week's ban for not noticing the 30 sign and carrying on at 66, but do try the 60mph trick if you haven't - it just makes life so easy, takes out all the frustration of overtaking, braking, competing - and me, I just LOVE saving £55.00 on a round trip to see my ageing mum. The fact that my TD5 will soon be ten years old is a sobering thought as well: I don't run as fast as I used to either:) .
