Boost 0.5 bar

:D
I've recently put a reconditioned turbo on my 300Tdi. I complained about it and the company replaced it. The first one got up to about 0.7bar when I was thrashing it up a decent incline. It's response, when driving, was very slow. When you put your finger in it and spun the blades it would only spin about half a turn. I never thought anything of that until I got the replacement. The blades in the second one would do a few revolutions before stopping. I thought hmmmm............. This one boosts up to 0.8-0.9 under the same load. The Landy accellerates and puls much better and the response to the loud pedal is much sharper. My boost gauge is plumbed in to the back of the inlet manifold.
I'll have another play with the turbo tomorrow I have checked it for play but I never payed much attention to how well it spins freely,I have looked in the top of the pump where the boost diaphragm is but again just opened it had a quick look inside and looked clean as a whistle so put it straight back in the same place so ill squirt some wd40 or silicone spray in there.
The trouble is I've got nothing to compare it against,it's the only landy I've ever driven and I've owned it for 5 years lol and it's always been like it, I just put it down to being a bit old and slow,I'm abit reluctant to start messing with the fuel pump adjustments until I can get it near to what it should be,im 99%sure the pump is standard, still got the anti tamper cap over the fuel adjuster, and there's only one score mark on the boost pin,I'll report back, thanks for all the info so far,
I saw that YouTube video the other day fast as f**k:D

The boost pin is quite crucial to put it back same as it came out if your not sure dont fiddle lol - but when it comes out if you look in the hole you will see a little thing sticking out the side of the wall - that moves in and out and delivers more fuel when on boost - that’s the bit that partially seized on mine.

Might not be your problem, just worth a mention is all

Fuel and air filter changed about 6 months ago,and I just checked the throttle is reaching its max and it is,the fuel filter was full when I removed the old one and I filled the new one before fitting.
Would the original exhaust have anything to do with it?because after the down pipe it's the standard 2.5td exhaust ?probably clutching at straws.

Well in that case I would be looking into giving the injection pump a slight tweak, after of course checking the fuel pin as mentioned by flat above as I to have had mine partially seize after one to many dunkings!

Diesel exhausts dont really block up like petrol cars of old so i would say thats not your issue and Iirc the 2.5td system is pretty much the same as the 200 tdi incl the downpipe, but Im not 100 percent sure on that bit.

Right then,I've checked the little pin in the pump and it was fairly stiff to move in and out,so I squirted some lubricant in there to be on the safe side and worked in and out a few times, and it moves now with little effort,I've checked the turbo spins freely and it does but it's no fidget spinner:rolleyes:the only thing I've not been able to do is to put the boost gauge pipe to the inlet plenum because I haven't got the right fitting, however I may pipe it into the pipe that comes off the actuator to see if I get a different reading, failing that I'll have a look at tweeking the pump or buy a boost pin but I want to do some more reading on them 1st before I chuck 1 in.
I've taken it out for a spin and it now reads 0.6 bar (every little helps)so must off helped playing with the pin.
Thanks for your suggestions so far
Much appreciated

Well, you've inspired me there, marra. Since my engine rebuild and sorting my turbo, my engine has never pulled so well. (I've had the Landy 13 years) However, I still think it must be able to deliver more in the standard set up. I've got reconditioned injectors in it and I'm assuming the turbo is working optimally, so the FIP is the next thing to look at. I suppose I should bite the bullet, fork out the cash, and send it off to diesel bob. I do like to learn about these things and do stuff myself if I can though. I've just not had the bottle as the FIP has a 'don't touch it or you knack it up' aura about it.

There is a good write up on tuning the 300tdi fuel pump. Plus a few vids showing tweaks being done on youtube.

Cheers

Cheer, mate! It's got pictures anorl :D
Posty must have tried to deliver the crank tool today, but I was at work. They've left it at the post office :( Don't know why they couldn't leave it at the neighbours. Anyway, the Mrs might be able to get to the post office after work tomorrow. :D

I'm kind of the same when it comes to adjusting the pump, I sh*t myself incase it goes wrong, that's why I'm tempted with a decent brand boost pin, because from what I've read they are designed to fit a untouched standard pump, after that I'll probably pop a straight through exhaust on,which I'm struggling to find.

My brother's 90 diesel turbo had a split wastegate actuator diaphagm which was p1ssing all the air out. A new actuator is bloody expensive for the 19J so i fitted a similar actuator for a garret t25 which was fraction of the price. The swap involved some angle grinder and hacksaw work but the result was a reliable 10psi which is close enough for that engine. Anyway, the moral is that it's worth checking your wastegate actuator isn't leaking:)

If you search theres a recent thread where the conclusion was the ramp on the boost pins allowed way to much fuel in at low boost conditions causing excessive smoke and simply turningt eh std pin 90 degrees clockwise was the cheap and easy way to go

Search for boost pin or boost ring and have a good read

Cheers lynall will do,I suppose as long as I'm methodical with it and Mark everything as i go in standard position I can always put it back how it was, might be a plan for the weekend :D

Yes mark everything and maybe even take pics as you may not want to revert fro months and then will have forgotten

Always take piccies IMHO, who doesn't have a smart phone theses days???

Watch the cost of doing so though :eek: - you might wear the memory out using it :rolleyes:

NOT:D

@Turboman IIRC, don't blame him. Although I use mine regularly. Not for pictures though, cos the lens got wrecked during the rebuild, too much oil, grime and brake fluid on it  I'm sure he'll have a camera though :)

Aye, I know Mr Turbo doesn't - but I'd suggest he is the exception that proves the rule!

( at least that's my story, and I'm sticking to it :D )

I don't have a smartphone, and I know several other people that don't have them. :) And I don't wish to have one, and don't feel any need of one.
My puter is adequate to all my needs. And I do have a camera, compact digital camera, very nice, so I can take pics of my boat.
