I remember one of the lads had a portable record player - 9v played 45's - of course we had it in our cars and this would have been around 1970 ish. We had to mind the bumps though but said lad had an A40 with no shock absorbers but lots of rust.

I had an old ZTE 3G dongle lying around which I SIM unlocked, and then used that. It seems to work ok, I still have occasional dropout issues, but I think that's more on the USB side rather than compatibility, as when it works, it works fine...

I'm toying with the idea of getting a 4G one - and again planning on getting either ZTE or probably Huawei, as they are the more common brands that are likely to be supported.

I haven't come across any of the main vendors selling 3/4G sticks to use with their units, (I usually check the 'other items' on their ebay profile to see what accessories they offer etc) so assume that most of them are compatible.

How's the install going?

Marty

install not started yet. Been travelling for work & doing wife MOT, etc, so still gathering bits & bobs ready for the install.

The missus has a 4G wifi thingy. Works very well. She got it off the Bay. Just set it up to connect to its wifi SID and you'll be good to go.

Update. . . . Old 7" tablet & Pioneer radio removed, and Android stereo installed. Still need to find a shallow cubby box for the old radio slot. 3G WiFi dongle is just behind the instrument cluster, so gets a good 3G signal. Might need to extend the Joying WiFi antenna to improve the signal to the stereo.

The DAB+ glass antenna that came with the DAB-USB is really crap, so I made a better antenna based on this link. Mounted the antenna on the rear screen temporarily with tape, and ran the coax to the receiver behind LHS kick panel. 5-Bars reception on DAB is pretty good in my area, but need to test drive to be sure. FM radio is using both P38 rear quarter antennas via a 2-way combiner.

Not using the speaker outputs, but instead feeding Line Out fro the head unit to the HK Door Amps & Subwoofer. Plenty of audio level, but need to solve the background buzz. Will be installing a 5-way RCA to Balanced converter, which should cancel all the noise.

What FM antenna combiner did you use? My FM reception isn't the best - mostly because it's only running on one antenna.

For the dash cubby box, I've just looked back on my emails, and it appears that I bought an Autoleads FP-016 unit to fit into the section where the radio was - to give the cubby box, and then a set of FP-21-00 edge finishing trims to cover up the outer edges.

I can't remember if the DIN unit was the full depth one, or the shallow one. I know I swapped for the shallow one, as for me the full depth one got in the way, and the shallow one is still fine to fit my phone etc in.

Cant remember where I found it, but it looks like the one below. I just added two adapters to plug in the P38 antenna feeds, and then the single plug goes into the radio. Seems to work ok, but couldn't hear any difference whether I used left, right or both antenna.

It's only the initial fitting & testing. The edges around the screen will be cleaned up, and there will be a small cubby in the slot where you can see the head unit at the moment.

Update on Android Head Unit. I had similar glitching issues to Marty, so I upgraded the heatsink & added a fan. I also got a 1m screen cable from Joying and moved the electronics to under the passenger seat. With the seat trim in place, and the seat lowered it's quite well hidden.

The processor runs about 15-20 degC cooler now, plus have plenty of room for a full depth single din cubby box in the old stereo location. Also makes it much easier to access for loading apps, changing memory card music files, etc.

The small aluminium box to the left of the head unit contains 5 balancing transformers, which convert the RCA Line Outputs to balanced inputs for the HK Door Amplifiers. No silly resistor bodges, and no speaker buzz because the audio is now done properly !!

Its a shallow unit fits straight in where the current cubby box fits just need to do a little bit of trimming hence wanting another centre console for 1st fit.
Steering wheel controls programmable to it does everything it says on the box will run new speaker cables direct to all doors and proberly upgrade the speakers but will see how good the current ones are
