Which winch?

Hi all,

I'm on the market for a winch (finally...). My landy is a Defender 90, which i use for weekend offroading, daily driving and overlanding, so no winch challenge or other competitions here.
3 options:
Superwinch Talon 9.5
- +- the same price as the Goodwinch?
- big brand, so easy to get spares?

Goodwinch TDS 9.5
- seems to be very popular among Land Rover owners
- heard locally that they tend to rust a lot and aftersales is quite bad. Could this be why Paddockspares is no longer stocking them?

Warrior Samurai 9500
- Very good price
- Made by Kigone along Goodwinch?
- Can't find many reviews...

Any opinions?

David Bowyer Mr Goodwinch, has lousy aftersales care and just wants your money, but speak to anyone but him there and they are most helpful.... but they are good winches and lots of tech info on them. But I have to admit I wouldn't get one again and would go for WARN.

But don't forget you need to upgrade springs etc with the winch weight on the front.

Was checking the Superwinch Talon at FirstFour, the price seems right, about the same as the Goodwinch

He's saying the winches are good, the people who work there are good but the guy who owns the gaff is a knob.
I don't know anything about winches apart from the little gay X6 super winch I've got which although considered too small for a 110 has rescued me and others who have just needed a quick tug.

I was show how to use a heavy duty ratchet strap (think lorry type) to 'winch' a defender out of a situation using only man power.the idea is you get a taught line from landy to anchor point...then with another person pulling around centre of strap (one needs to be in vehicle to brake/drive) you can actually 'pull' a vehicle clear...it works!once you have moved a bit brakes are applied,strap ratcheted tight and do it again until clear.There is a mathematical equation that i cant recall but its something along the lines of fro every inch of pull on strap by person (a) equates to x amount of pull force on vehicle(b) try it if you ever get chance....you will amaze yourself...my wife moved a defender on a slope around 3 inches with one small pull! Plus it costs alot less and weighs a hell of a lot less!!
But i digress...!

Mate of mine has had one on his 90 for the past 4 years, never serviced it, just and it and changed the rope to a synth one. Still pulling like a boss, it is what I'll be going for soon as I feel the need for one.

It all really comes down to how much you use it, if its daily pulling big trucks or comps then a WARN, occasional use out laning Winchmax would suffice.

Hi lift jack, a rope and a few shackles makes an effective winch if you don't mind taking your time. You only get about a metre pull each attachment.

My favourite solution is not to get stuck in the first place. Get out and walk the dodgy bits if in doubt.

Good advice...the way I see apart from to pull someone else out (and maybe a few other reasons) why would you need a winch?the way I see it your likely to be winching yourself IN to more trouble !

They can be picked up off ebay for reasonable money if you looked. Least mine was.

Always keeping an eye but half decent ones still seem to be around the £150 mark :-/ Mrs will kill me if I buy any more Land Rover stuff this month...or worse still I'll have to smooth her over by spending more money on her...works out a VERY expensive tirfor then!!
