I've managed to break my turbo oil return pipe (discovery) whilst taking turbo manifold etc off to be cleaned/painted.

The pipe for a discovery is near on £100...
Where as all others defender 200, 300tdi discos etc are aprox £15 for very similiar looking pipe

Looking at garrett t25 oil return pipe kits on google i see they are available for a lot less has anyone had a go with the universal or such type kits?

Thanks

I need this part!!! been rebuilding landrover since october yet after having 2months back on road after 6 off doing clutch, timing belt, chassis, bodywork, suspension, radiators etc etc etc etc etc
Il get there one day...

I hope

I am sure you will be able to get one made - I get quite a few hydraulic hoses made at our local hydraulic hose place, and even make some myself, for the low pressure stuff, which IIRC, the turbo return is..

In fact, I doubt the supply is more than 70 psi*, so, with the right fittings, I would make one...

Someone will know the pressure - what is it folks??!?!?!?

Hose for a tractor etc. is 20-50 quid, ram recondition is 100 ish. Never had a turbo pipe made, return pipe for mine is unavailable, AFAIK, luckily mine is ok.

The fittings will be the money bits - if you have the old pipe, take the ends off VERY carefully - if you do it in less than half an hour per end you're going to fast!! ( our local place used to be able to do this, but after some pratt make a mess, they are not allowed to anymore (!)) This is an important pipe, so take your time, and use as little force as possible on the grinder / dremel etc., you use to remove the outer swaged ferrule.

Up here pipe is sold by the meter, sometimes you can buy half a meter, sometimes not - it is not expensive - I just bought some 52mm bore 300 bar hose, and that was £25 per meter - the (guessing) 10mm bore you will want should roughly be about a tenner - then you'll need new ferrules, (one for each end at about £2 each ish ), and then swaging of same, IIRC this is about £4 a pop... so, in round numbers, using your old fittings, £25 ish should cover it, maybe £30. ( our local place will tell you all this upfront too... ). They might have super high temperature pipe at more money, which will probably be worth having. No idea on cost - don't use it. Isn't the current one a braided hose? ( My EGT gauge records temps of 600 C at the EGR hole on the manifold, so, it would be worth checking the spec of any hose they suggest. YMMV. )

If you need new fittings, isn't the top one a bulkhead type fitting, bolted onto the blower? I doubt they will have that, our local place wouldn't - and although they could order it in - it would probably be expensive. Again, IIRC, the bottom fitting is something like 3/4 BSP Female - which they should have lots of....

Sorry only just see this was fitting a carpet for probably the future mother in law...haha
See this is more my idea lol i like having a go myself..
Going to have a look into these bits know but if my head gets too fried in the search il let them do it .
Both options sound far better than driving 2/3 maybe 4/5 hours bank hol..then about £110 for a pipe,
Very good info though i searched for ages for answers like ive just got here...

Your right it is braided but only for about an inch it looks pics below of part
Time for some googling again...

Thanks

Not sure if that'll work or not - I use an angle grinder with a 1mm thick cut off wheel - I did some the other day - i will see if I can find the "sliced and diced" ferrules.. and post a pic or two....

I'll PM you too...

Been talking to @FranksDiscovery - and we thought some pics of the process might help.... This is how I do this, and YMMV - take care, wear safety specs etc.....

So, here's a ferrule cut close to the end with a grinder - DON'T cut too deep, or the barbs on the fitting will get damaged, and nullify the whole process!!

1.jpg

repeat the cut every 90 degrees, and then using pliers pull the tails out to release the pressure on the pipe...

2.jpg

Get the tails out of the way of the pipe...

3.jpg

and pull or prise the pipe off the barbs on the fitting we want to keep.... leaving us with a completely knackered ferrule, but a good re-useable fitting!
4.jpg

a bit of lube (!), WD40 etc, might help with this last bit!
Enjoy !!!

Perfect!!!
I can feel alot more confident having a go now. much appreciated for your time on this your a good man, and pics always helps :)
Here goes...

Heres some pics of the pipe
Firstly need to say a big thanks to DiscoBFG for his time earlier going through it. Much appreciated :)
I used a hardened dremel cut off disc cut exactly as stated..hardest bit was peeling back and that wasn't hard either.
Tips i could give for this particular pipe ERR3492
* draw a line in permanent marker or similiar down the pipe to mark orientation of pipe for fitting back afterwards.( it might matter)
*Cutting go slow as stated
*you will see the braided section as you go through the metal dont go no more!!the metals no more than 1mm thick.
you will be fine to cut down one side to the braided and score the rest to almost same depth.
Once you try to peel it off it almost falls off.
Step one done and by all means could be alot of saved hard earned ca$h
And i learned something ;)
The method given works a treat!!!

Thanks again
And will post pics tomorrow of completed pipe and cost

:mad:Well where do i begin..
Was hoping to show pics and results of Err3492 pipe repair we have been going through.
Whilst putting all my nice shiny polished rocker cover / inlet manifold on. The poxy two inlet manifold studs stripped the thread in the head!!!!!:mad::mad:
Powercoil kit ordered.
I pray it works/i can do it.
Anyways enough of my woes
Heres some pics of completed pipe in place..
One thing i will say when putting the pipe back on
Bolt up the 28mm end to the block first. With cut pipe and clips.
Then lower turbo onto the pipe with the 23mm end attached to turbo loosley fitted.
Then bolt turbo to ehaust manifold.
Now tighten pipe bolts clips in the best postion:cool:
I was there for ages on my own up, down and under before i decided unbolting the turbo again is the only way. ( and quickest)
Will post update on if pipe work when if i get it going.

Also the shop couldn make the pipe with correct stainless pipes and ferrules as they use much larger ferules and also the diametre of all there stainless pipe was slightly bigger.
(Landrover SIZES prob:confused: )
This pipe i have is rated to 100° and about 400psi and is for oil.
A ft of pipe and two parker clips cost me a £5errrrr so i was happy.
One bloke nearly sent me packing as he wanted to do a proper job i could tell.
Went an sat in my van realised nowheres open and im up for a go at a bodge (maybe) (and i see there was two cars in there car park and one was a discovery td5, he will understand surely i thought.went back in and thats the man i got this time:D happydays he understood his on his 3rd disco)
