motorway noise

I have a problem which was recently pointed out to me by a passenger While cruising down the m5 the other day.
The level of background noise in the p38.
I have been driving it for 6 years, R reg 180k you get the picture...shes a bit like a 50 year old prostitute...a bit loose.
The bulk of the noise is through the tired door seals, so I am looking to tighten up the doors, thus improving the problem.
Has anyone removed the bar in the doorframe, for the door latch, ground a couple of mm off the bolt holes in the bar backplate to give some adjustment.??
Anyone see any problems with this ??
I'm not going to be ripped off for new seals, or fit used, I dont use earplugs (unless I'm at home) and will be driving her to the scrap yard when the time comes.

If you cannot adjust the door with the striker plate/hinges the seals must be fecked. Even second hand would be an improvement

Morning Alan sorry to hijack. Now might be a stupid question but how would you adjust the doors at the hinges?

Just guessing that you can slacken the hinge retaining bolts and move the position of the hinge. Cannot see that the build tolerances are that fine that there is no adjustment. May be on the door side also/instead. I will have to look.

So you want to adjust the doors inwards below the body contour to counter knackered rubber seals. Bit silly, change the seals. Or remove the seals and bent the flange they sit on out a few mm.

Only by 1 to 2mm it wouldn't affect anything else but door seal compression and would be quicker 'n' easier than bending metal (which was not a bad idea)
also, wrong time of year to be repairing leaks due to crap welding, like I had to do around the windscreen a couple of years ago.

I know it's not a bad idea, it is the method most body shops would use.

I spoke to Rimmers today.

New door rubbers for the P38 are no longer made. When they were they were £130 each

So you will have to take pot luck in getting second hand ones that are better than those you already have.

All types of door seal is readily available, just get the best match and make some up.

Well bugger me... It was the easiest thing I have done on this car..ever.
Seems a land rover engineer saw this as a potential problem and gave an inch for adjustment due to wear or even initial fitting.
Noise level now 1000 times better and door now closes with a reassuring clunk. Wouldnt adjust it too much as will put strain on rest of knackered door parts.
Did all the doors...should keep fumes out now from the knackered exhaust.
