out of interest, what length prop you got and whats the distance between the flanges?
having the same problem with lcbandit's rear prop, just a tad on the short side. unsure which prop she has at the mo. (and cant remember the length, its written on the welder in the shop :doh:)

bitofabugger about the door as well!

The rear prop on the 90 is now a Discovery 300tdi front prop which, off the vehicle, had roughly 3/4" difference in length, yoke to yoke, between that and the original 90 rear prop, when they were sat together in their respective positions as they came off each vehicle. However, the rear prop that was on the 90 had a lot of spline showing, about 1", whereas the Disco one didn't, and now, with the spacer I made up, doesn't have any spline showing when fitted to the 90, so to my mind is a better fit!

I suspect someone may have fitted a 90 front to the rear in days gone by before I got it ...

Yeah, can't understand the door. The bulkhead 'foot' and the A pillar matched up hole for hole, the foot was bolted to the vehicle and pillar bolted to that and checked, re-checked and checked again so many times for alignment. The only thing I can think of is that I somehow messed up with the foot, but can't see how as it's a simple 'line the holes up and bolt together' job!!

No worries, it'll be fettled later today .. ;)

Just having a think about your propshaft situation there, should the prop not have a little bit of spline showing when on level unloaded conditions, to allow for travel when the springs compress? as it is now, id say if you put weight in the back the springs would compress and the prop wont shorten as its already as short as it gets? or am i missing something?

The spline showing on the original prop was outside the rubber 'boot' The spline on the newer Disco prop are just covered by it's boot.

So, I dunno what it should do, but there's at least another inch it can shorten and about two inch it can lengthen. Enough for my suspension I think. I doubt the prop moves anything like that much until there's very large suspension movement, and whilst I have +2" springs and +5" shocks, that's only at the ends of the axle, the 'off' centre, where the prop sits, mostly rotates around the A-frame ball pivot .. :)

As it is, the original prop is goosed anyway, a UJ went, no biggee, but when I came to replace the UJ, the splines were not only wobbling, but would barely move they were so gummed up from years of neglect .. and I've only had it since february. It took a vice and multiple blows from a hammer to separate the spline from the body, so any movement can only be an improvement, I feel.

It really isn't an issue for me, I just wanted to know about the differences for future reference. ;)

I've got hold of a sailsbury rear axle and I've heard they are an inch bigger so you have to shorten your prop, do you think a 300 tdi front prop would work on my 90?

your best bet is to get someone to measure 300 tdi rear prop 200 tdi front etc
 
Not had many problems lately, done a lot of laning though and had three issues.

The engine was getting hot, very hot! So after some umming and arring I looked at the fan/viscous coupling. Tried to remove it but couldn't get the spanner in at all. So, bent the fan back, removed it and it was fitted wrong way round! It had been trying to blow air into the rad. Turned it round and even on the hottest sections, high revs, slow speeds, under load the temp gauge barely even registers now! It now also fits inside the cowl where before it was about an inch proud!

But now there's a small coolant leak out of one of the radiator hoses, no biggee, it'll maybe cut back and re-fit, but I might replace them all at once, makes sense to me 'cos they all look old and tired!

And the rear prop! OK, my spacer bodge didn't work. It seemed to at first and was fine for a while, but on the Coast to Coast run after the first few lanes and low-box torque it started to vibrate. Only minor so didn't do anything about it. Lasted right till Sunday evening and 500 miles later the flange bolts sheared and I lost the slider/flange/UJ etc. Dark, wet and raining, it stayed lost! Into diff-lock, rest of the prop removed and home for a round trip of 511 miles!

So I reckon the idea of the spacer is sound, but my choice of material was wrong. I am guessing, but I reckon the Nylon is 'slippery' enough that it allowed the flanges to move sideways relative to themselves when under high torque and eventually the bolts fatigued. I might get one made in aluminium billet, so it cam clamp nice and tight and be supportive. I know they're available to buy from paddocks etc, but I like being able to make stuff!

Anyway, a replacement slider (cheers TC), new UJ and jobs a good 'un, we have a fully articulated at both ends and middle, working rear prop shaft. ;)

Just need to fit it now ... but off away for a week doing nowt! Easington, across the river from Cleethorpes, about 10 houses, 3 pubs, a gas works and empty beaches!! At least that's how I remember it from way back ..

A new shelf ..

Well, an old school table, cut down and welded tabs to bolt it in .. ;) This is, after the coast to coast, to allow me to keep the camping gear totally separate to the Landy gear, so when I need tools or spares, I don't have to unload the camping stuff to get to it!

The gaps at each end will allow me to carry the tarp. sleep mat and long stuff upright. I intend to create a small lip, but will also use bengee cords to the dog guard/bulkhead mesh to keep it all on top.

Re-bushing and cleaning radius arms. Old pair, been sat at TC's for a while, rusty, crappy bushes, but identical to what's on, so they needed the bushes removing and cleaning a tad, so here we go ..

First off, drill a load of holes through the rubber .. it’s a beeatch .. drill slides off (brand new Ti coated 5mm) the rubber grabs it and makes it awkward .. but worth persevering with. Once the bush looks surrounded by notalotarubber then #### it wiv’a’ ‘ammer … I used a toffee hammer in the vid, so it took a few whacks .. ;)

Then use a small cold chisel to knock the outer lining in on one side, then the other and again, just whack it out wiv’ a’ ‘ammer .. ;)

Easy as, took longer to set the camera onto a tripod and mess about than it did to do all four bushes.

Then cleaning, as you can see in the video the radius arms look crap, old, rusty and covered in bits of old underseal.

but I found this in a ‘cheapshop’ somewhere and haven’t used it before so tried it .. fookin’ ace! 10 minutes tops, job’s a good ‘un ..

They’re currently hanging up having had a coat of primer in my recently constructed spray booth ..

It's a nackered old plastic 'greenhouse' that our lass uses for the recycling bins and such-like. ;)!
 
Them wire wheels for the grinder are good, The big ones shake the grinder like feck though :eek:
Oh and you should have brought them arms to me, Would have made life easier ;)

Just watched the video and they didn't look too bad to get out anyway, Last set I tried was a ####.
That's what I thought f*ck this and bought a press :eek:
 
Heh, yeah it looks rough with lots of holes and rust, but the main bits are very good and I work on it much more than I post about it!

Ive got an awesome cheap shop near me paul ill bring you a twist knot wire brush up when i come up you end mate, makes life so much easier!
