I'd be worried they'd come off. I believe the X eng ones are screwed onto the plugs.

I had a look at these after Sam said to avoid paying for pre-made ones. I can't see why they'd "release" and move anywhere. Would they even need glue?

To be honest the magnets in the premade/bought magnetic diff plugs are pretty weak, an old diff plug and some epoxy to glue the a magnet on should do but if you are worried get one with a hole in, tap the plug and bolt it on

With the bigger tyres on, does it alter the speedo reading much? I have the 3.9 V8 and want a set of larger wheels (without body lift etc because I will still be using it as a cruiser!) Definitely be dropping back into this thread for some ideas for mine

Tyre change alters the speedo yes.
You need to change the speedo drive gear in the transfer case.
This is not easy with v8 though, all v8 uses 23 tooth black gear, and the square drive is smaller than regular gears that tdi and all defender uses
To alter speedo drive you need to fit 200tdi speedo cable, but v8 uses speed sensor for the ecu so this causes trouble.
I'm running megasquirt so have fitted tdi speedo setup no problem
However 3.9 uses speed sensor in the transfer case which is doffeent problem altogether
If you can make some sort of adaptor or packing to allow tdi gear to drive speed sensor then you will be ok
I'm on 33" and using blue gear 20 tooth. Green is 21 tooth I think.

1 option that might be easier would be to work out the difference and make a new speedo background

Oh and as a semi side note, I wish a more suitable D2 front axle option was available.
It's the width that put me off really.
I also can't overlook the fact that many challenge defenders still use the rover axle.
Perhaps weight is key I don't know but I think perhaps the black swivel balls are causing problems and hopefully with chrome balls on snapping axles will be a thing of the past.
It's definitely a 4 hours in the mud job I could do with avoiding....
Did U get the chrome swivels from Gwynn Lewis? I need to replace mine and was about to order the black ones until I read your thread. Don't fancy them so much now. Ha.

Ill take mine apart and see how cruddy they are then might just replace seals and bearings if i can get away with it then. And preference on the stub axels, might aswel do them aswel.

Some folk are experimenting with rubbing down chrome swivels and filling them with chemical metal to remove pits then spraying them with a quality acrylic/epoxy paint to smooth them over, with good results.
Regards stub axles, no preference, doesn't seem to be a breakable item.
I have just fitted 4x bearmach so I hope that is true anyway!
Disco 200 rear stub axles are expensive! FRC4320 fits and is cheaper but uses a different lock washer style.
Not sure on price of disco 200 front as have just fitted AEU2522 cv which uses FRC4320 stub axle anyway.
If disco 200 front stubs are cheap then ok to fit 4x fronts all round.
Use RTC3511 inner hub seal, ditch the outer seal, lightly grease your wheel bearings for initial lube and allow your hubs to run in axle/swivel oil
Also do not use one shot swivel grease, use ep90 as originally intended
Use Corteco FTC3401 swivel seals, but must make sure swivel balls are good or oil will leak
This setup works as a complete system, post up if you have queries, getting one part if it wrong could end up in some components without proper lubrication.
