Very nice mate! so is that sorted now?

Cheers mark

Well

It now has 2x24 spline stock diffs in, Ashcroft shafts all round, chrome swivel balls, 24 spline knuckles, AEU2522 CVs, 10 spline hubs with new stub axles, Ashcroft drive members, 110 front calipers with vented discs up front, new rear discs and calipers.

It still needs:

Magnetic drain plugs
Oil in the axles
Oil in the swivels
Brake pads all round
Brake hoses throughout
Front propshaft fitting

And then it should be ok to drive on the road!

Hi Mr Noisy,
Have to say that is a fantastic piece of work. Gives me all sorts of ideas what to do with mine.
How do you get on with insurance? Hope you don't mind me asking?
I've done a few mods to my v8 and was quoted £650 fully comp as it stands! Checked how much without mods and you could knock off about £400! Thing that gets me is that most mods I've added are to improve the car, that's why you do them, but you get penalised for doing so, seems crazy!!!
Once again keep up the good work can't wait to see you continue to improve an already outstanding vehicle.
Mike:)

Nothing major left then!
how come you stuck with 10 spline stubs? bit clueless with the swivel section of the axles!

Nothing major?!

Not for now, but the stock diffs are only in for the run to Donny and back, the big save up will be for the Ashlockers/HD CWP/pegged casings.

But in the short term yeah it's nearly ready to roll.

Interior is in bits afain needs throwing back together and at some point after the show I need to start assembling an onboard air system, using my high capacity compressor that I've had for years and don't use! :p

10 spline hubs are better because they are deeper, ie the stub axles are longer so the bearings are more widely spaced which is much better for bearing life.

Also then you can use AEU2522 which are strong CVs, on 24 you only have Ashcroft as an upgrade from stock and they're £600

Ashcroft do a AEU2522 replacement aswell but I don't plan on needing that option!!

Yeah all in all I'm glad this has fitted together, slight mix up with the hubs but that's sorted now, otherwise it's a lot of different parts from different cars of different ages, took a fair bit of planning! :D

Hi mate

Thank you for your comments, I hope this build can guide you in the right direction with your own project :)

This vehicle is insured through our business so it doesn't really work like normal policies, but across the board they will charge you for mods because they can.

It's more of an excuse to take money off you I think.

Could understand doubling the bhp etc, but as you say any enthusiast owned vehicle is most likely better driven and maintained than your average Joe, so our vehicles should be assessed on various merits not risks.

But that's no fun for the insurance company Christmas bonus!

I love the feeling when a In depth plan goes right. All the research, hunting for parts and planning coming together to make an axle that shouldn't break any time soon, you must be chuffed!

Fingers are very tightly crossed.

Only weak link in transmission is Bearmach AEU2522 cvs, at 25 quid each I can afford to break a few but I don't think I will to be honest.

Will see how it goes.

They say OEM 2522s tend to crack the bell, aftermarket tends to shear the stub shaft.

Didn't want to fit worn OEM so as not to damage new Ashcroft flanges.

But anyway will see, never did a stock disco CV and they're supposed to be very weak!

Regards the axle structure, we are of course still on swivel balls! :(

Chrome balls at that, which Gwyn Lewis confirms are in a different territory to the black aftermarket balls that are supplied new these days.

So after investing good money in a very mint set I have every confidence there too.

But as with all new ventures, it's a wait and see job.

Will be very nice to have pegged diffs with Ashcroft everything else (on the back axle at least!) so that I can bury the loud pedal with more confidence.

Not really had chance to have much of a play with the Pitbulls yet to be honest!!

Cheers :D

Oh and as a semi side note, I wish a more suitable D2 front axle option was available.

It's the width that put me off really.

I also can't overlook the fact that many challenge defenders still use the rover axle.

Perhaps weight is key I don't know but I think perhaps the black swivel balls are causing problems and hopefully with chrome balls on snapping axles will be a thing of the past.

It's definitely a 4 hours in the mud job I could do with avoiding....

D2 axle is wider, not sure by how much

Good conversion IMO if you start a new project with the axle then build the rear axle to follow suit

I am too far down the line with mine to start changing wheel and tyre options about etc, simply couldn't be fussed with starting from scratch with it

Think the mounts are different, ideally you'd start on a fresh axle tube and weld the brackets on a jig

Glyn Lewis would be the man for this if you weren't fancying it yourself

Would be wonderful to shorten the axle but that is far easier said than done

If I remember correctly, the D2 axle is 4" wider than the D1.
The front radius arm mounts are different so need redoing, the rear needs all the bracketry redoing.

Why would the width put you off? just stick standard offset wheels on, that would keep it pretty similar to what you got right now, your on -35's right? no spacers?

What I might do it try and weigh the axle before I put it on, and weight the old one also.

I have -50s on x10"

An issue I have is finding d2 fitment 15x10 with a suitable offset that allows a loss in track width but without fouling radius arms

This could be a tall order without having a custom set of mach5s made at considerable expense!!

It is the fact that pretty much everything would end up custom is what bothers me the most

I dunno, gotta be worth a shot but I'd want to be starting with the axle and going from there, I don't want to modify my current setup badly enough just yet to warrant trying it

Plus I don't think it would be possible without custom wheels.

Interesting how they say D2 are common in comp safari, also basis for bowler wildcat, you can imagine comp safari being the most likely type of racing to break swivel balls, maybe that's why, maybe it is track width, maybe it is steering pivot centre, who knows!
