I have just had my head skimmed on my 300TDi as it was slightly warped, The head gasket that came off was a 1 hole gasket, what should I be refitting it with? Will the same gasket do or do they run too close on the valves?

Cheers

The gaskets are usually marked with dots so if its been done before you will meed a thicker gasket to allow for the skimming if it has one dot u will need one with two and so on ok

I would run the 3 hole gasket. A lot of people will fit the 3 hole and its recomended even if you didn't have the head skimmed.

The better safe than sorry choice. ;)

You could always read the bloody workshop manual.... Ever thought about measuring the piston protusions ?

Gasket - most people say one up on the last one , not knowing how much was skimmed , you could do it the right way and measure the ...well , like 8inaV said , or just sod it and use a 3 holer

Cool beans, that was kinda what I was thinking....

I could, or I could just ask on here and see what people recommend, that so much easier and I get the added benifit of starting an argument for asking a technical question in the technical question part of the forums...

This was what I was thinking, I know they run very tight and wasn't sure what would be the best way to approach it, I have got a 3 hole on order now so will get that fitted...

3 hole is std one to fit, as said its based on protusion and valve depth ,ive allways supplied 3 hole gasket too people doing head gaskets and interference or not is found when turning engine over to reset tappets

Well it was a 1 hole that came off and speaking to the engineering shop its only a light skim but im gonna go 3 hole anyway to be safe. I shall be carefull when resetting tappets e.t.c. and make sure there is no contact...

Another 300TDI that will make less power... If the machine shop do their job properly and check valve face to head face measurements,(And remove material from the valve seats if necessary - unlikely with a TDI,more likely on a TD5)there is no reason not to use a 1 or 2 hole gasket - AFTER checking the piston protusions.Which is a 10 min job.Why not do it,be happy that its back together as close as it can be as it left the factory ?
