what size mig welder would you recomend finaly going to get my own. Will need a lot of practice but have been using arc welder so shouldnt be too bad

100A+ will give you enough penetration for anything on a Series though more powerful will give you a higher duty cycle and may be more useful for any other projects

BUT......probably more importantly you need to look for something with plenty of power settings because often the problem is turning them DOWN low enough for thin work like exhausts and door tops

anything around 100-150 amps as said a few things to watch out for are things like fan cooled ones that are better as they run a better working time and watch out for welders that are converted to pub gas bottles as theyre a damn sight cheaper to run than the bloody soda stream bottles from the diy shops

the setup i have is an old sip migmate 130 turbo



its heavily modified to do the whole range of welding such as ive been inside it and uprated the settings board and added switches to use previously non conected coils on the transformers so i have ultra low settings capable of welding the likes of bean tins if nessecary and another setting that boosts the output to a stupid level so itll breeze through anything up to 12mm thick

for most things on landys and vehicles in general the normal settings are fine

just dont be duped by the shop dickheads telling you 0.8mm is best its not for vehicles its just a struggle that doesnt need to happen

my rig is on straight co2 the co2 argon mix isnt any better and i use only 0.6mm wire as it can easily be used on a lot lower power and get good penetration with anything and doesnt transfer as much heat to the gun as the thicker wires will

for the thin stuff such as door tops and frames the general setting is 1cfh on the regulator output should just barely whisper out of the end of the gun and the wire speed round the 4-5 setting on the dial used in fairly short frequent blasts waiting for the glow of the last blast just about fading will turn out a weld stronger than the original metal just a little prouder than the surface quick and easy to file down and flatten off

doing chassis work with 3mm steel just speed the wire up to about 5-6 and on a medium amp rating a good idea is once youve tacked the plate in place use a small angle grinder with a thick grinding disc along the seam to be welded to create a v groove to fill with weld this guarrantees good penetration to both metals and is again just proud of the surface of the steel and is a lot less grinding and flatting after the job is done

I use Argon Co2 mix from Energas but it is expensive if you arn't doing a lot of welding, I am building a comp motor at the moment but once it is done I will look else were, I have seen these

its just standard co2 but such good stuff its equal if not verry close to argoshield but when i get me bottles filled again ill ask him if he does it

i do know he gets old empty pub gas cylinders and sells them full for £30 a pop and after the initial layout the bottle is yours and he will refill it for £12.50 there after

Ah right. I can get CO2 for 12.50 a refill and the initial one off bottle rental fee was 12.50 inorl. I'd be interested in an argoshield refill just to see the difference but if not ,no worries. Cheers anyway.

fancy doing a gas bottle rampage again fanny as i could do with 2 more bottles to my collection i got 4 on the go at the moment and still have to get a refill for them evry 3-4 weeks with the ammount of welding jobs comeing in lately it seems like im the only cnut welding in south manchester

Could be tempted, just trying to tie the guy down as he is the organ grinder and the monkey I spoke to gave **** prices again.
