Hi guys, got another problem hope somebody can help yesterdaycar just conked out, tried starting it car was dead thought maybe starter was goosed, took starter out trid to crank engine by hand could on get a little turn, ie,from say twelve o clock to ten past ,then cant get anymore movement, checked starter that was fine engine oil was fine,so that rules out a seized engine, just before engine stopped the engine felt like it jumped lke say when it jumps out of gear, friend sayed maybe timing chain maybe snapped, has anybidy got any other ideas.thank pat.

Diesel or Petrol??

Which Year??

P38 or Classic??

L322 or L320??

If Diesel....did you take the Glow Plugs out??
If Petrol did you take the Spark Plugs out??

If not, you will find it very hard to turn by hand as you will be fighting against the compression.

Think your friend maybe right or maybe it has dropped a valve. Only way is to take a rocker cover off and see if turning engine back and forth moves any valves. That would mean timing chain ok if it did. Sounds like something has gone terminal.

if youve not removed spark/glow plugs you may be building up pressure in the cylinder. if you remove the plugs and try again , if it turns over thats a better sign. if it dosnt cold possibly be a slipped cam chain.

I again refer to my previous post....do people ignore me?? or am I paranoid...what was that??:eek:

Will do that 2 nite ,you never said if it was hard job to do valves or timing chain, cheers pat.

Bit of a relative question, personally I think taking the head off to put valves in Wudnt be too bad, but then iv done it before on lots of different engines, if ya a home mechanic and the most ya do is service, ya mite struggle , the big question is , if ya dropped a valve or broke the chain what else ya gonna have to replace

Tappet barrel, Valves, camshaft, cylinder head, piston, to name but a few.

Thanks for the replies guys,if its the timing chain is that a big job,and what about the valves is that a big job also, cheers pat.

yep big job and expensive on either engine, way forward imo would be to drop in another complete engine. that is what i would do, first port of call tho is to establish what has happened before doing any unnecessary work, could be something simple or major, don't rule out clutch failure, try looking at everything before jumping in at the deep end, good luck.
