update on jatco gearbox story

hi guys just had a phone call from mackies transmissions in glasgow they said they done a diagnostic test and one fault code came up so they cleared it and took her for a run still a bang between gear changes they done more tests and have found a brake band fault along with some internal faults so its gear box out and recon £1,920 total price so its beans on toast for a while i also phoned the main L/R dealers in glasgow and told the guy who told me the gearbox was a sealed unit and didnt need a fluid change to look at his service list as one of you guys pointed out its there at 60,000 mls CHANGE AUTO FLUID . so i had a very quiet parts manager on the other end of the phone . thank for all your raplys and advice cheers p,s one wife for sale only £1.920

just a thought, there will be a time when i get round to doing the Auto fluid change, just wondering about the level plug, it looks like its no higher than the drain plug, so when checking the fluid why wont it pour out if its at roughly the same level as the drain plug?

because above drain hole it a pipe thats the right hieght for level

ashcroft is about £400 cheaper but unfortunatly im about 400 miles from them by the time i paid to get the car there it would work out about the same thanks anyway .

i seem to have engine running as it should now, BUT, the gearbox won't go past 2nd, I remember seeing a list of jatco symptoms and causes but can't fingd it now.
any adeas?

There's info on faults in the rave disk. What problems do you have? What work have you had done so far?

Sounds like you need to find a new garage

You can remove the front 'sump' plate and change the solenoids on the JATCO valve block which deal with the shifting. Your first symptom sounds like a pressure valve solenoid which causes the box to shift harshly at slower speeds. However, to do the job properly you will be looking at at least £500 inc VAT and labour.
