Has your Freelander ever had a coolant leak from a failed water pipe?

pipe connection failed?
damaged pipe - cut or split?
pipe worn over the years?
melted pipe?

yes, a pin hole just where it swelled to join rad outlet, thought is was the rad but in the end a cheap fix, cut the end and pushed it back on...........

I have a 2001 1.8, nothing had been done from new, until I replaced top and bottom hose comlete with thermostat last year. This summer I replaced all the remaining coolant pipework including the metal water rail that runs behind the engine. Good job I did, there wasn't much metal left! Another few days or weeks and catastophic failure would have occured and that as they say would have been that. I noticed black scummy stuff in the coolant tank, good indication of inside of coolant hose breaking down, that's what prompted me to replace the lot.

Oh and me coolant bottle and new cap, was replaced two years ago by the sdealer I bought it from, I noticed it was crazed all over when I was inspecting it before buying. Not sure if it is an aftermarket crap part, I just noticed it is starting to craze around the filler neck, after only about 5000 mls, so guess I will be replacing it with a good part.

yes mine did it was the pipe that went over the top of the gear box and went onto a y joint on the front of the engin td4 auto I have never seen a pipe go like that it seemd to have melted all the outer of it. It must have sprung a small leek and then got inbetween the layers of the pipe and I was wondering where all the water was going until I got underneith to change the oil and saw a trace of the antifreez running down the gear box soon fixed it though and now it does not use water like it did because all engins use a little water that is why you should check them weekly

Yes, one of the hoses that connects onto the IRD cooler metal pipes. I just noticed it by chance as I was under there tending to something else. Little seep that ended up nearly drowning me when I pushed the hose and the poxy thing split wide open!

How I laughed...

anyone knows the part number of the 2 metal tubes for the coolant that are mounted from the front all the way back on the right side of the engine?
my Freelander is a April 2000 L series and just found some nasty rust where the tube goes under the turbo in the back of the engine.

best regards

Thanks for yer answers. Was talking to someone about hgf failures a while back and remembered him talking about coolant pipe water leaks being a possible cause, un owners not realising they were driving about wivout coolant. Remembered this when replacing me anti roll bar bushes when I saw me coolant pipes. Several at the rear of the v6. Some close to eggsaurce pipes too, but held to one side wiv brackets. Got me wondering if others had had pipes fail. Glad I got me coolant level sensor fitted. :)

Hi teddywood1,
I write about your post re the coolant pipe that goes over the gearbox from the 'y' connection. Mine has gone the same and I am after the part number. My situation is that I live in Cyprus and the Landrover dealer is fairly hard to deal with without a part number-also I could get it from the UK and save myself a whole bunch of €'s.
Any help would be very much appreciated
Many thanks

Yes, in a word. The circlip securing the main pipe out of the header tank was old n' ****e and was the mian source of me peeing coolant out by the litre every journey, easy jubilee clip fix. The header tank was crazed and mucky looking, I suspect it was leaking small amount of steam through the cracks and knackered cap (nothing compared to how much was lost through the hose) so replaced the tank and cap with new LR ones. It's still a weak point though and I can see a dribble when I check. I'm going to have to drain it all out and sort out the tank hose once and for all with multiple clips I think.

When I fit the EWP I'm going to replace all of the hosing etc anyway. No point in fitting a bloody expensive piece of HGF prevention only to have a hose burst on the M1 and my motor asplodin'.

Will.

you might find it in that link .

Thanks OldIrishWulf,
The link is very much appreciated but there are many hoses on that site without illustrations.
Sadly got no reply from the person who has changed this particular hose.
It maybe because I have not formally introduced myself...who knows. If that is the reason for no reply then here goes.
Mick's the name and cut my teeth on 2's and 2A's in the RAF as an MT Fitter in the early 70's. First tour overseas was to Cyprus in '73 and my last tour was also here in '98, hence now retired here; did 37 years service in all.
When I retire for good I intend to completely restore one of a handful of lightweights I have found in a yard near Paphos, being ex Cyprus National Guard they are right hookers with a gap in the windscreen where a bazooka used to live!
Well that's me, now could someone help me identify this confounded hose that is attached to a 'y' metal pipe, goes through about 90 degrees, is covered just after the bend by fabric, has a bore of about 3/4 of an inch, goes over the auto box and is about 9 inches long. It is attached to the Y pipe by a spring clip (the type that requires a pair of pliers to open up) and at the other end has a jubilee clip that looks a bugger to get at.
Thanks in anticipation
Mick

reply to baptista No do not know the part number but it will cost you over £200 as I priced one up just before I swapped my car I am also sorry for not answering people about part number ect: but I was away in Ireland with my own faults at the time
