Springs and leafs!

My landy has a lean!!! The n/s/r spring is tired. Now it has 11 leaf springs fitted to the rear at the moment. Ive found a pair of 7 leaf from a lightweight locally for sale for very little money. As they have less leafs will my series 3 sit low at the rear or do less leafs mean they are more articulated? Like i said they are from a lightweight and mine is a series 3 safari.

Hmm, not sure but be aware that the springs are "handed". Are both vehicles 88", I am not sure if 109" have bigger springs. If you fit both parabolics they should lift it level.

yeah mines an 88 and the lightweight is....a lightweight. Ive seen a post on another site saying that lightweight springs have been interchanged with 88's but they had 9 leaf ones! I believe they are the right length but are they up to the job. Being a lightweight they are obviously army spec whereas my 7 seater is farmer and children spec!

I read that the Lightweight is actually heavier than the standard 88" Landy. I have read on here that "Britpart" springs will not last long so maybe worth checking the lightweight doesn't have britpart ones. I think they will be up to the job.

i wouldnt have thought light weight was heavier than std 88

It sounds daft I know, but they say the lightweight is heavier than the 88.
109 rear springs are beefier than 88 springs, no of leafs varies but the force required to squish them fully is much greater for a 109 rear leaf.
And as mentioned springs are handed, landys were meant to sit level with the driver sat in the vehicle, so the o/s springs are a tad tighter.

Reading a post the other day that stated as from 1967 they stopped fitting handed springs at the factory

Lightweight was indeed heavier but it could be stripped down quickly for airtransportation not alot in it but it was deffo heavier. Springs are handed usually and a landy should lean slightly to the passenger side. i.e passenger side lower.

Lightweight springs will fit fine to your Civy 88. I've been messing about with springs latley and have almost rebuilt a set of 4. and taken off the parabolics because I believe they were too stiff. The rears were some light duty 88 which now have only 5 leaves instead of 11 or so. These are even more light duty now for my 80 inch. I have oiled them and intend on leaving them open to the dirt and mud which some people think is a bad idea and will wear away my springs (hopefully it will a wee bit) Nice and soft. But this is for a trialer not a road going motor.
