Stubborn Driveshaft nut....aaaarghh!

Trying to remove two driveshaft nuts which are welded on,

the other two came off by unstaking the flange then sheering the flange off with small bolster. (small groove was made with dremel bit, flange tore off like cheese :D)

These nuts just arent budging, managed to break a 1/2 square bit on the extension bar due to the leverage :eek:

Think I'll dremel through the nut and try and split it

Any tricks to removing a seized driveshaft nut with conventional tools are welcome? (note no airgun)

Have you tried unbending the tabs on the locking washer

The flanges are staked into the groove on the shaft (standard Rover setup)

they were all unstaked using a wedge/drift, then soaked in Holts anti-seize for a day or two....still no movement

after this the flange was torn off completely...........only then, did the penetrating fluid start to work its way round the threads. passenger side is done, drivers side which has the most corrosion.
 
Nut splitter from Halfords or local auto factors, bough a set a few years ago and they've got me outta the dodoos a few times.

Other thing thats worked is securing a ring spanner or socket with a power bar to the nut on the motor attaching a nice heavy rope and towing it with another motor.

Will eventually buy an air gun or battery impact driver.
 
Big stilson wrench and a length of scaff pole sounds good to me - if you can stop the other end rotating.
 
jeezis... get a + cross shaped wheel brace and a short extender for a 3/4" socket set .
Then get a good 40 - 50mm tube 1m or a bit less , place the tube over the + wheel brace .

do i need to go on . I'm surprised to see you had started this thread NI . doh .

Cant get clearance to get an open wrench on to it, nut is recessed. If I remove the wheel for access, I have little to stop the hub spinning, no gearbox or diff in place to lock it...............more awkward than anything

For leverage, had the handle from a 3ton jack on it (1metre)........worked for the first two, until the third broke the 1/2 square bit on the 42cm bar.

Had a crow bar wedged in the wheel to stop rotation.

All I can say is glad it was the bar not my knuckles, kinda liked that bar too, owned it for about 15years :mad:

I'm always up for brute force and ignorance, but this motor has been run without the centre caps on the wheels, I'm guessing the drivers side gets more salt spray from oncoming traffic with winter driving.......need I go on :p

busted 1/2 drive bit says it all, dremel is looking more and more likely.
 
need threequarter inch stuff with impact type socket but i think you will have more success with your dremel, it will save your driveshaft threads.

Cheers, but TBH never had any issues with driveshaft nuts, 1/2" drive 32mm socket has always been adequate.

the nut is crap, too shallow, with over sized flange, what ever happened to good old castle nuts and split pins.
