Just another update on The Never Ending Story(NOT LIMAHL)

Was away in my truck last week having started back having had 9 days at home(working on ‘The Obvious’) then I realised that all that was needed ‘pre start up’ was the replacement of the shock assemblies of the rear suspension and hubs etc.

(No thought of brakes or fuel etc)

So when I got home a couple of days back got stuck into it all. New bolts and nuts some copper slip where required, working out what goes where etc, finding erroneous bits and bobs, looking at my newly ‘repainted’ susp components, two new adjustable arms, drive shafts in and all put together. All the ‘static’ bolts/fasteners holding the fuel cradle, rear sub frame, trailing link bracket to body bolts etc were all torqued to correct specs (click) , bolt heads painted and then once dry ‘paint marked’ so any ‘lefty loosey‘ stuff would be viewable..

My drums were not in bad nick so I needle gunned them and cleaned off any remaining rust with an air grinder treated with rust remover then painted initially with (5?🤔) coats of weld through primer. Then the same amount of gloss black from UPol.

Yesterday was ‘brakes day‘(at least the rear) I have done these many times before yesterday was not an enjoyable one. Handbrake cables a ‘faff’ just fiddly as feck.. and I have small hands!! Then onto fitting stuff to the rear drums. For some reason I was doing this piecemeal as that’s how I have done it in the past..At one point though I stopped to buy a ‘fitting kit’ off of eBay, with all new bits and bobs… and whilst doing so saw ‘ready assembled’ ‘drum kits’… this go me a thinking. Firstly… I’m sure I had bought a ‘fitting kit’ before(literally 5 mins after making a
Purchase off of fleabay) secondly I wonder if I was to pre assemble the rear brakes I could just throw them on…

A very quick search through my ‘spares’ shelving revealed the fitting kit with new spring and basically all that’s needed… (DOH!) and secondly assembling the brakes off the car and then fitting is the actual way to do this job. Had to use a screw driver to help leverage the lower hand brake bracket thing into position but it was all fitted in very quick time with nil swearing.. unheard off for me!!

Meant to be going to work tonight(BOO!) but it looks like there isn’t any work for me til tomoz now(YAY!) so I will be heading back up the garage to have another ‘fiddle’ and maybe even get the thing ready to start etc..

Removing all that was an education in itself. I could have bought new arms etc but instead bought a 20 tonne press. bush removal kit and new OEM bushes. All because of a 50p sized ‘soft spot’ on the rear of the nearside sill.(MOT failure!) ‘Inquisitive Me’ then started ‘poking’ things and decided I would have to replace metal on the inner arches too.. and it snowballed from there. I have MAP gas but invested in an inductive heater from Amazon. An Amazing tool and NEVER failed to release any bolt.. except the long hub bolt on the near side..

All in all the prices for OEM trailing arms etc from any generic supplier was more than the bushes, press and heater combined. Glad I did it in the end but it’s been a long process with some months in between work. Not there yet but not far away..

All the metal work (
Sill (50p hole ended up being a 20cm by 15cm repair section) and both front side of inner arches) fabricated by me and welded in..a steep and scary learning curve.
