Crank sensor is one of the only sensors on the TD5 that can stop it from starting, any wiring faults or damage to the sensor can cause it to turn over for ages before firing up

Eureka! Thank you James, I found the push rod was wound in completely so I undid it about 2 turns and its made a massive difference! Makes the whole effort of rebuilding the calipers seem worth it.

Ok thanks, I've just checked and the brake pads on the front two calipers are loose but the rear ones aren't. I'll try winding the pushrod out a bit and see what happens. Thanks
