Chaps/Chapesses !

Grateful for the benefit of any help/suggestions please - and hope this isn't too stupid a quest ?

Before I bought my 2001 Defender 90 TD5 - everyone told me you couldn't stop a Defender leaking oil . . . .

Well - by dint of a very clever local mechanic and a not inconsiderable but equally not unreasonable sum of spondoolics - they have been proved wrong and I have a Defender that I can leave for any length of time on the most pristine of block paved driveways without a care in the world !

However - the one thing I dont seem to be able to cure no matter how I might try - is the bloody internal water leak !!

Whenever left standing in the rain - and bizarrely it seems to be worse with gentle and continuous rain rather than the bucket-loads of hard driving stuff - whenever I pull away on the next trip out and reach a decline - water gushes forward along the side of the roof lining and deluges out upon me from the apex of the front screen A Pillar !

Occasionally it happens on the passenger/nearside - but most frequently/predominantly it's the drivers/offside and I finish up with a sodden right hand/forearm and knee/shin/foot !!

The sun roof has been completely re-sealed at least three times - the door rubbers have been replaced with LandRover genuine part replacements - the windscreen and alpine rooflight rubbers similarly replaced with genuine parts - and any 'gaps' between the roof panel sections have been sealed - and yet the bloody thing still leaks like a sieve - and it's now starting to bugger up dashboard electrics and corrode offside door and screen fittings etc !!!

HELP please ?

Grateful beyond bounds for any flashes of inspiration and/or knowledgeable, plumber-like sharp intakes of breath and a "what you want to do is . . . "

Cheers

Mine does the same.
Normally a bit of hard braking and a sharp right hand turn ensures the roof emptys itself over the wife :D

Given up trying to stop it leaking.

Have you put silicone around the bit where the roof meets the windscreen? That cured mine. Although, there was a heavy thunderstorm last week and I left the flaps open resulting in a large puddle on the mats...

Check or just re-seal with silicon the roof joints, stand on side steps and you should see 2 going from front to rear and 1 going across side to side, I did mine and the top of the windscreen seal after getting wet. Chech any Ariels in roof. Roof brackets. Spot lights. Good luck.

i always just thought it was normal for a defender to leak?

I drove mine in heavy rain 2 days ago and i was smiling because i thought it wasnt letting any water in. Then my foot got cold on the accelerater and i realised my trainer looked like it was thrown in a river, it was soaked. I still had 1 dry one though so not to bad

If im wearing canvas shoes or suade then I don't wear them to drive in for that very reason....constant pouring onto your right foot at turns.....done it for 13 yrs...like I said adapt and buy spare shoes and a towel in your cubby .

you can by waterproof socks now that are atually really comfy maybe ill just by them. I dont mind getting wet in my old battleship. Something has to keep me amused while going along as i have no radio

I had same and thought it was the perished windscreen rubber, but it wasn't.

However if you look in the roof gutter above the drivers door, where the gutter joins the roof you will probably notice a dark line of dirt. This will be trapped in a joint and it is through this that the water is entering. It may not seem like much of a split of gap, but its enough for capillary action to draw it in. On mine, at the windscreen end of the gutter you could get your fingernail between the gutter and the roof, but once sealed (I used lead sealant) it stopped the water getting in and no more wet legs!!

A mate had exactly the same problem as well and it also worked for him.

Thanks for posting - this is on my list of things to fix also!
