To repair or not to repair?

Appreciate all the replies. New engine quotes were too high and I needed wheels quick so have bought a Disco 2. Seems in decent enough condition, here's hoping it is. Thanks.

To repair or not to repair?

Cheers for the reply. I'm going to pop round to the garage tomorrow to see what they say. The gasket was blowing out the back in two places, that's what caused the oil leak which I didn't realise. I took it back because the garage thought the tappets just had not settled. But now I think he...

To repair or not to repair?

I've a 1996 300TDi that has sadly died. Love the car, but don't know what to do. I know nothing of mechanics so any work will be done by a garage. I had the Head Gasket repaired a couple of weeks ago. It was fine for a fortnight but has now started tapping. The garage, who I trust, say that...

How many Discos have you owned?

Just the one in my profile pic, a 1996 300tdi. I've owned mainly Series III's and MGB's before. I've only owned the Discovery for a few weeks and have to say that I absolutely love it.

    Disco 1 Removing Rear Reflectors?

Okay, I might have a look at that. Cheers.

    Disco 1 Removing Rear Reflectors?

Hi Guys & Gals, When I bought my Disco 1 one of the rear reflectors was damaged. Sourced the parts easily and cheaply. I've just replaced the broken one, mainly with brute force breaking what remained of the old reflector off the car. Now I planned on replacing the other side, just so they...

What have you done to your Landie today.

Drove to work. About to drive home. Oh the excitement of my life :)

    Insurance

I use Footman James. I pay around £130 fully comp, classic car policy.

    Series Transmission Top Speed

Well the manual says no more than 30mph in 4x4 if I recall. If you do make any sharp corners on tarmac in 4x4 at 30 I hope you have a roll cage!

    Young driver here!

Got my first Landy when I was 26, my third car following a crappy Fiesta and a rust ridden MGB GT which I loved but couldn't afford to maintain. I tend to get around 15 mpg (on a good day) out of my Series 3. I do use my Landy to commute to work, but then it's only a 10 minute drive. In...

    All sound advice. :)

    Long distance advice

When I bought my Series III the intention was to just use it as a local runaround, especially with the price of petrol nowadays. Next week I'm going to make a 130+ mile journey. Like many old Landy's it does tend to wander a little and keeping it going for a couple of hours plus is going to be...

    paint job

Very true. I love classic cars and have owned a couple of MGB GTs. Loved them to bits (except the cost of keeping bloody things running). But every trip to the shops was one of dread knowing that some a-hole in a rep-mobile was going park too close not giving a damn when opening doors...

    Doctor Who

Hey folks. Now Land Rover are one obsession of mine, another is Doctor Who. And the news series is fantastic. Land Rovers have been featuring in Doctor Who since the 60's, and plenty in the 70's when Pertwee was Doctor 3. There have been some good moments - exploding a grenade in the back...

    Towing Capacities

I used to tow a caravan with my previous Series III form the Midlands down to Devon. And while it towed fine up to 55mph, okay acceleration was a tad slow, the strain did take it's toll on the engine. I think that had I not done the long distance towing I would still have that Landy now.

    MPG Question

I like to think I get about 15mpg out of mine as I potter around on short journeys. I also think I'm kidding myself :(

    Looking for my first Landie

Well £1000 should get you something mechanically decent. I paid £950 for mine and it's pretty solid, just needs cosmetic tidying - which I've put off for 12 months now. The Land Rover magazines have the most choice but always seem to priced a tad high IMHO. Ebay has some choice but make sure...
