    Rear crossmember replacement.

I didn't cut the loom, but pulled it back inside the chassis leg leaving a wire 'mouse' on the end. It was great fun teasing the connectors on the loom through the hole in the new crossmember extension and nearly as bad getting a new grommet on!

    Manuals

Haynes manuals used to be a good thing to have for many vehicles, but there are better options online now and RAVE is difficult to beat particularly when its free.

    Reversing Light and Offside Indicators

Thanks for all the advice on this issue. Finally admitted defeat and sought help from local independent who spotted that the rear loom was rubbing on the exhaust while moving. The cable insulation was damaged alllowing cables to short although the loom cover didn't really show the burning...

red diesel anyone know the law?

What a great apocryphal story, but Irish 'red'diesel is dyed green. Is suppose that the colour wouldn't show up in the moss!

    Reversing Light and Offside Indicators

Update - all bulbs removed, cleaned and returned to clean holders after checking individual holder earths yet again. Connections behind both rear quarter panels and in nearside gearbox tunnel checked together with connectors to reversing light switch in transfer box. Fault remains! Wild card...

    Reversing Light and Offside Indicators

All 6 indicator units and bulbs plus the reversing light unit and bulb are less than a year old. I've checked each bulb and the earths to each holder. I'm convinced that somewhere the power to the reversing light is flowing through, or back through, the offside indicators. The fact that the...

    Reversing Light and Offside Indicators

I've been a bit busy with other stuff for the last couple of days. Tomorrow looks mainly dry, so I plan to follow up on the various helpful suggestions. It is another classic Sherlock Holmes problem. I can't remember the exact quote, but it's something like: when you have eliminated all other...

    Reversing Light and Offside Indicators

Good call. I'll look there next. From memory, that's where the plugs that connect the rear loom sections sit. It's possible that I have disturbed something during a recent transfer box oil change.

    Reversing Light and Offside Indicators

96 Defender 300tdi original CSW When I select reverse the reversing light comes on, but suddenly so do the offside indicators and the indicator light on the dash. When this happens, the offside 3 indicator bulbs are on continuously, suggesting that they aren't getting power through the flasher...

    Threaded!

I have just had exactly the same problem and was equally surprised at the small amount of force needed to cause trouble. In my case the plug sheared off at the shoulder just above the head. Having tried to get the remains out by various means I called in help from a neighbour who works for an...

    Landrover 90 Seat Retrim

I too used the Exmoor trim kit and found pulling the cover sections together very nearly, but luckily not quite, impossible. Exmoor's YouTube video, accessible from their website, is very good in pointing out the differences between new and old covers. It's also reassuring to see that the...

    Rear Tailgate adjustment

Annoying to have snow getting in. I know. I failed to secure a single rope loop on the canvas back of my SIII one mid-winter evening in the Falkland Islands. The next morning the vehicle was absolutely packed full of snow from rear to windscreen and from floor to roof. It took 2 of us half...

Anyone know the diameter of the battery earth lead?

Coming from a marine background, battery capacity (and electrics in general) are a topic of perpetual discussion and much misunderstanding. In fact, the CCA figure - Cold Cranking Amps - is not a measure of a battery's capacity, but rather of its ability to deliver very high currents for very...

Clive, Understand that your sanity comes first, but it's a great shame. Your x-member is looking superb on my vehicle. It's definitely its best feature!

    Headliner bodging!!

Why so? It's a question that I had asked myself too.

    Towing advice (Caravan)........

Yes, if caravans seem occasionally tricky to tow, at least the contents don't try to tap-dance like the contents of horse or cattle trailers!

    Towing advice (Caravan)........

Totally agree that twin axles are best. They can also help a bit with not getting the nose weight wrong - you want to pull it not carry it!

    Heater Controls...what am I missing?

Yes, I miss the heated screen in my old Disco 1 - in the end, the heating element wires in the glass were the only metal bits that hadn't rusted away!

    Rover 75 seats?

I went for the refurb option, using an Exmoor kit, but added their heating pad system. Of the 'luxuries' that a Defender is missing, at least heated seats are more practical than stylish!
