Hi.. I’m new to this forum and would really appreciate some advice.. I have a 2012 freelander 2 with the high spec fibre optic radio system.. I recently damaged the radio head unit by putting a power surge through it while fitting an aftermarket sat nav. The local land rover main dealer diagnosed it as a failed ‘head unit’ and want £1200 to replace it. Q: can I get a 2nd hand Land Rover radio and simply replace the damaged one? Does the radio have a code? Will the same model land rover unit be compatible with the rest of the cars systems without any technical wizardry needed? And, forgive my ignorance, but does ‘head unit’ mean the actual radio box and fascia? Would I need any other parts?
Many thanks in advance for any help.

The bit in the dash with the buttons on it is the HU. However the audio system is made up of multiple components, dotted about the vehicle.
If LR said the HU has failed, then that's the bit with buttons in the dash.

You can just get a suitable replacement, but you will likely need it to be configured to your vehicle. It's not coded in the traditional way, whereby you enter a code for it to work. But I'm sure the HU will be configured to a VIN, which means it'll need reconfiguring to your FL2.

I'm curious how a fibre optic system can send a power surge to the HU though. And what is so bad with the factory nav anyway? Sure its a bit slow, but it's factory and integrated into the vehicle. I for one won't be changing mine, and definitely not at the expense of functionality of the rest of the system.
