Hi I'm new to the site and landrover and am after some advice/opinions please.
Just bought freelander td4 04 as a bit of project.runs great but a little smokey.had oil in exhaust so after reading up on here came to the conclusion it's the turbo
So striped piping,intercooler etc and clean.crank case breather original and clogged.but no play in the turbo that I can see,but rocker gasket leaking and glowplug/injector (not sure what its called)soaked in oil and coked up.
So can i ask would the crank case breather being blocked cause this and the turbo may be ok as no play in the shaft of the turbo or is it something I've missed.
Any advice appreciated.
 
I would change the crankcase filter for what it cost in fact go for the better option the bmw one you need to see if it is the injector or the glow plug as these are two different items if it is the injector leaking test or look at the pipes that connect to it if it is in the well of the injector then it is probably the copper seal
 
Sorry to keep on but latest is took the backbox of to do a bit of under sealing and poured about half a cup of oil from the back box...
 
Question now should strip and overhaul the turbo or am I better leaving it alone.

to me that's a bit of an unknown .. i.e. without inspection .. hard to know its internal condition ..
the worse that can happen be that oil gets past the seals and into the air intake ..
that oil will fuel the engine and possibly result in a runaway engine .. i.e. self destruct ..
[ good to have a knife handy in-car to cut the manifold intake hose should that happen ]
and afaik .. the majority of turbo failures be caused by the driver not letting the turbo cool down
before shutting off the engine .. .. that results in the oil inside the turbo bearings to burn-on / coke-up
thereby .. over time .. restricting the oil cooling-lubricating flow .. ..

be one reason i choose to use fully synth oil .. as it doesn't coke up as much as mineral oil ..
plus .. if the option is there .. i'll choose a downhill run before shutting of the engine ..
and if the engine has been under a heavy load .. e.g. climbing a long hill .. or long motorway run ..
i'll make sure it gets idled at about 1000rpm or above .. [ to keep oil pressure up and to avoid diesel wash ]
for about a minute or so before shutting it down ..
might be a bit o.t.t. .. but if in stationary traffic for an extended period i'll also keep rpm at 1000rpm
for same reason ..
