my L322 3.0 diesel autobox developed a fault a few weeks ago......from cold it wouldnt move after selecting drive untill I reved it up a bit and then it would drive off and behave normally .
This happened a few times and I took it back to the garage I purchased it from who booked it in with an autobox specialist. Last night after 3 and 1/3 weeks of waiting I finally got the call to collect it from the repairers, it wouldnt change gear at first , then it was ok after the mechanic red the fault codes and deleted them , but it has gearbox failsafe lit up on the dash, any ideas ? . The gearbox appeared to behave correctly but I left it with them.

does it have to have the adoptions reset or something to put the gearbox failure out ?.

Hey! I just rebuilt my box. What is the mileage of the car and what is the service history on the gearbox? I had very similar issues with my box. It was moving okay most of the time but then the FAILSAFE TRANS PROG would come on and there would be no gears.

After you delete the codes the failsafe mode goes off the car drives for okay until it goes under load and throws the towel in again. So don't get fooled as it will drive normally at times.

You can reset the adaptations with Bosch ESI for sure as I did it. But to "put the gearbox failure out" you have to open up your wallet wide.

This happened Friday night when I was collecting the car from the auto gearbox repairers , its just had a new torque converter and full rebuild :(

before , it would not pull away in drive for up to 10 seconds after selecting "D" and then it would slip for a few seconds , then be fine all day , the trans failsafe didnt start lighting up untill AFTER the rebuild ......
 
Do you mind sharing the cost of this? I found that they do it in stages but always try to sell you the entire box. I was talking to a guy to source me the box which he advertised on ebay for £795 then he told me the TQ and valve block is not included and it would be £2200! Joker.

I would if I could but the garage I bought the RR from paid for it , so I have no clue as to cost

Sorry to hear this has happened to you.

The 3.0 diesel RR has a General Motors 5L40E gearbox. A very common fault which can cause this is actually the valve body. It's not something we have experienced as this is where road testing comes in handy. It is so, so important that total care is taken when building these VBs as even the slightest sticking or leak off can cause major faults.

My guess would be this is your problem, however without seeing the car I can't say for certain.

It seems like they changed the TQ and the worn parts inside and bolted the old VB back in. And then the pressures are all messed up!

AutomaticTransmissions welcome to the forum! Are you fishing for business here because if you are there are plenty of broken gearboxes (and hearts) here ha!

We're here to help :)

Another suggestion would be did the place you took it to machine the pump flat? 5l40e's suffer from low pressure issues due to a soft aluminium pump, it creates gouges and grooves in the surface where the pressure can leak off. If you're not getting enough pressure from the pump, then the pressure isn't going to be right coming out the VB.

More than happy to give advice, message sent to accywingy with regards to sponsorship. Just awaiting a reply.
