Hello everybody,
I planing to buy a freelander,i have one in my visor:

2003
1.8 Petrol,with gas cylinder,170 000 km

I mention i don`t want to make off road. It`s only for the street.

So what i should know?I read about this model and cylinder head gasket problem.I don`t want to rule prefect, but i don`t want to have major problems(and by that I mean not work :) ).
What is the consumption with gas cylinder?

please introduce urself

personally I would only go for a td4 as they are a far better engine

how long is a piece of string , lol

as the 1.8 has got a terrible reputation I wouldn't even go near one,

td4 is the way to go, but of course ur decision

I'm going to stick my neck out here but - I think the 1.8 petrol is a simpler motor to work on and maintain. Of the two diesel engines which do have better reputation the L series is easier for the owner to work on as it has fewer electrical sensors ... than the later TD4.

I have a 1.8 petrol. If you maintain the motor carefully and ensure the coolant is always at the correct level and is of the correct type then they can be quite reliable. Ignore the coolant and you may well wind up with an expensive repair bill.

Diesels generally use less fuel but do cost more to maintain and tax...

Well in the time I've had my 1.8, the engine has cost very little to maintain no more than any other engine apart from upgrading to prt stat and pipes and a new header tank - its just been the standard service parts.

Them that don't know and run their 1.8 for months without looking under the bonnet will need deep pockets ;)

All the trouble with my td4 was with the fuel system. Firstly the injectors were faulty, had them done at a pretty penny. Next to go was the high pressure fuel pump £456, and then the injectors having gone out of warranty are knackered again. The rest of the car was okay but is no good without a reliable engine. My experience only as I know loads of people have got brilliant td4's.

No-One can guarantee no problems in future...

Ensure no knocks or clunks from either front or back
ensure the propshafts are in situ including a VCU
carry out the wheel up test
check water bottle for cracking and that water level is correct

and then walk away

You need to go into this with your eyes open - there are good ones, occasionally, but it does have a reputation as a lemon. you have been warned

Check for sludge in the oil filler cap,oil level dipstick and coolant tank.

Get it up to temperature on a good test drive the temperature needle should go no further than just under half way ...then check under the bonnet again and underneath for any leaks.

Drivetrain issues and how to look after it are common throughout the freelander 1 range, there is plenty to read up about on here...but you must just check that all the tyres are the same make/type and size with the best tread at the rear.

As I said, my 1.8 has been ok since I bought it, I didn't know about any of these issues until I joined LandyZone...then I knew to keep a good eye on it and did a few mods too - at least you have found this information before you decide ;)
