How did you change your ird oil. I know we're everything is at. I just need to know the easiest way of tackling the job. Did you use a special tool or did you just remove the exhaust pipe to get to the ird?
Thanks.

removed the engine sump tray , didn't need to remove anything else

bought an oil suction gun from machine mart

https://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/...-500cc-oil-suction-gun?da=1&TC=SRC-oil filler

also used it for the rear diff, as there's no drain plug on the diff so used this to suck the old oil out and replaced it with new

plus be prepared as the ird plug is extremely tight

use flat sockets and u may also need a long bar something like a 18 inch to start with

if u give the filler plug and tap with a hammer it sometimes helps

hope that helps abit

So use a flex socket bit right? When I moved the car to the pit today. I had no idea how to get the flex socket into the little hole haha wouldn't fit. (That's what she said) I'll have another look.

u need a long bar, then a very short one with a universal joint on one end and then the socket

it is fidely but can be done, watch ur knuckles

u just need to get the engine sump guard out of the way

here u go, ref the sockets

https://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/search/filter/flat socket/type/any/page/1

plus don't forget the copper washers either

by the way is it just the ird oil ur changing,Mia's the gearbox, engine and rear diff all been done as well

hope that helps u

I think the killer nut is the one on the rear of the auto gearbox which isn't the level plug. When removed you loose reverse gear. Did know one at LR spot this could be a potential cockup waiting to happen.

As the IRD is right in the middle (left to right) of the car and low down, you need to be under the car to do it - its an easy job if you have a pit/hoist.

The drain/fill plugs are easily accessible on the back (facing rear) of the unit. I don't know how if exhaust on the V6 gets in the way - but not on the 4cyl/diesel engines.

The filler bolt is the one I'm trying to figure out. There's the exhaust that runs between the bolt. Really tricky to get into. Since I'm doing this job I might as well try to do the O2 sensor. What's the difference between the three? I want to do the upstream and downstream sensor. But where's the third one?

Had no problem getting to or undoing the IRD filler nut , I used the correct size socket ( 6-sided ) and a swivel headed ratchet , This allowed me to angle the ratchet handle forward to miss any thing in the way , Quick hit with a mallet and it came loose !

Am I right in thinking that ( 75W90 GL5 Full Synthetic ) (Carlube Driveline 75W-90 Axle Oil ) is the right spec for the IRD, or is ( Carlube Driveline MTF-94 ) the same.

Scenario lets say you have a clutch change, will the clutch centre or garage use two separate oils or just the one, when refilling after a clutch change.

What are we looking for from the oil if and when we change it ourselves, ie no metal shavings, decent colour no smell ?

Factory spec for the IRD is Texaco S5 75W90; Specification: API GL5. Any oil conforming to this will be ok. The oil yer linked to looks ok.

If garages are doing a propper job then they should use the correct oil spec as per the manufacturer, for the different items/location. I would hope they would although I would guess some don't. For eggasample the ird and rear diff on a FL1 use slightly different spec oil.

Oil coming out the ird... no water/coolant in it. Drain has a magnet so eggspect some bit's of small metal on it, but not excessive. Undo the filler nut before the drain nut. Try to use 6 sided sockets on the filler as it's made of soft metal which rounds oft easily.

As per Hippos instructions;)
I keep a spare IRD filler plug and copper washer, just in case I need to get brutal with a stuck one.

Ere's a filler plug I broke'd previously.
