As above wanted a winch and winch bumper for disco 1, the mrs has been kind enough to give me my xmas money early so im after a winch, only got a limited budget so cant buy both new, but can buy 1 or the other if nothing gets offered/takes my fancy

Do what I did, get the winch and a mounting plate for it, then weld the plate to the steering guard, cut the bumper, hey presto, a 'hidden' winch that (to my mind) looks the bollocks, well hidden away and doesn't harm the angle of attack .. which many Disco winch bumpers do.

I'll even help you if you like mate .. ;)

Yeh, thats what ill prob do to be fair paul, just thought id put it out there and see whats hidden in peoples garages that there now willing to part with! Lol the only little snag ive got is the body lift, but saying that it may be in my favour, thanks for the offer too if you dont end up helping me out ill deffiatley be picking your brains for tips etc ;)

hey pete

better to bodylift before fitting bumpers then you can modify them to fit as part of the job!

some winch bumper (such as mine for example :D) are a very snug fit although you will have to clear a bit of space in front of your rad!

winch advice, do not buy a cheapo, buy a warn m8000 or similar thats in the sorriest state and it will be better than a cheapo, trust me, the brake units in the cheap ones are ****e.

happy to advise on winches seeing as ive had a number of them apart :)

I've got a winch tray if wanted, folded it up for another job which fell through

5mm folded steel not cut and welded, £65 OBO, drilled for all super winches if you're interested, has fairlead roller mounts etc

My warrior winch along with my pals has gone under I recon its the solenoid pack that's goosed, its not a year old yet so that's not a good start.

Difficult to kill a winch motor but easy to fill a cheap solenoid with mud Al

Get an Albright on there and strip the winch down whilst you're at it, good as new.

Although saying that all too often I have seen dodgy connections on the winch motor itself where the copper straps meet the insulated posts, the plastic insulation melts and shrinks and then the connection goes loose

Very simple beasts is winches so check the above before buying any new parts :)

absolutely not worth 260 quid, PLEASE do not make the mistake.

buy a old used warn for same money, get a solenoid, some wire, a switch or two (put on on grille aswell) and you'll have a better setup, much faster no load speed, it will last longer than a year and it'll generally be superb.

much more advice available if you need it but the general idea is DO NOT buy a brand new cheapo winch it is completely the wrong thing to do.

please trust me on this!

i had a budget of 400

was either

used warn 9.5xp with no cable, no solenoid, no switchgear nothing just bare bones

or

brand new warrior 9.5 hs

i went to great length to prise some information out of the warrior dealer regards the winch construction and in particular the brake design

turns out the hs is a copy of a warn winch and uses a warn style brake

on this, i bought one, as i needed the cable, electrics etc to use for some other winches i was rebuilding/selling at the time

as soon as it turned up i stripped it down and was delighted to find a warn brake an sealed drum, also brass construction brush assemblies in the motor were all excellent features of this winch

i feel this winch will last me a long time whereas other units i have had/seen/rebuilt in past have been poor quality and without rebuilds would last barely a year of regular use.

i had a 1986 warn m6000 that had spent its life working a recovery wagon daily and it was like new inside

hope that helps.

Im not familiar with that range but upon looking at the website i can see that they are slow (19 fpm no load) and the specs dont really say much of any great value

the 9500 to the 11500 has a larger motor as opposed to lower ratio gearbox which is good but still a 218:1 box makes for a slow winch

i cant see the tiger shark series being anything to write home about tbh, quality will be medium but the spec list reads like a basic winch

Well as above Pete.

I had the LP10000 and it was pure china. Rebuilt it many times and it was good as new again but it wasn't made for heavy duty.

The tiger shark range will be somewhere in between there and the talons which will be excellent.

End of the day cheap winches are ****, in the old days you could only buy good winches but they were dear, now you can buy good winches that are dear and **** winches that are cheap.

I found last year that around £400 was the least you could spend for anything half decent, be it a new warrior HS or a second hand warn xp

Cannot stress enough winch speed is key, you only need around 8000lb for a disco.

Defo buy second hand decent winch, if it needs work I can help with that but if you buy a new winch for 260 quid you'll need another one 6 months later :(
