Viscous Fan Removal

Ok, so my plan today was to change all the pulleys & tensioners on my 4.6. Got my 36mm spanner to the fan nut & turning anticlockwise just turns the waterpump, even tapping / shocking with a large hammer on the spanner just makes the waterpump pulley slip the belt & turn.
So, do i need a tool to hold the waterpump to loosen the fan nut? Or is there another way, i was hoping to get this done today in this fine weather

You can try jamming the fan with a piece of rag between the belt and the pulley, otherwise you need to make up a tool as described by Saint V8. Make sure you are turning it the right way, in the direction the fan normally rotated, it's LH thread on the diesel, don't know on the V8.

Thanks Data, will give that a try. Pretty sure i'm trying the right direction, fan turns anticlockwise so thats the direction i'm trying (looking at front of engine bay). If not i'll have to make up a tool to hold the pump, just nervous about shearing bolts etc.

Similarly measure your pulley bolts and fabricate a tool in similar vain!

In the end I took the two lowest Nuts off again as it was difficult to get the VC spanner on the nut plus the Pulley spenner...but it worked a treat!

I think i'll need to fabricate something similar ......mine just wont budge

I had a similar problem and jammed a large flathead between the belt and pulley but I was replacing the belt as well worked for me good luck

Gave that a try before looking at fabricating a tool & worked first time. Just wedged a large flatblade between the nut on the pump pulley & wedged in place while i tapped the fan spanner & we're in business.

So, replaced all pulleys & tensioner pulley......I thought it was just the tensioner bearing that was noisey but all the pulleys were ready for a change & my god what a difference that's made - VVVV quiet now!!
