So, here's a question I almost dare not ask.........what's so special about the Land Rover 110 (any age/variant) as compared with the Discovery (any age or variant). The 110 seems to be very over priced when I consider the Discovery is:

  1. Equally capable off road
  2. Equally capable of being modified
  3. Rots at same rate
  4. Cheaper
  5. More comfortable
  6. As rugged and durable
  7. Better equipped
  8. Less popular among thieves

I have a Disco 2 and have often thought about going for a Defender but find it hard to convince myself to spend the money.

Obviously I'm biased and would appreciate any advice.

Cheers

The 110 has one quality the Discovery doesn't, desirability.
A Discovery is all well and good and yes it is better equipped and more comfortable, but it just isn't a 110 :D It is dare I say it, a 'proper' Land Rover whereas the Disco is more of a vehicle produced for the masses.

Defenders are noisey, cramped, draughty, slow and of course thirsty:):):)
Disco`s are good CARS!!!!
:welcome2:

A few observations

  1. nearly as capable off road
  2. Body Rots, unlike 110
  3. Cheaper (see 1,2,5,7,& 8)
  4. More comfortable
  5. Not as rugged and durable
  6. Better equipped
  7. Less popular among thieves Quel surprise ?
  8. Less passenger capacity
  9. Less storage room
  10. Not as intimidating to BMW drivers :D

hi guys,
i have both, the 110 can carry twice ( if not more) as much stuff in the back , or in my case more pointers (gsp's).probably 5 miles less to the galon. i now only use the d1 for the longer journeys, motorways etc. if i am out hawking and only need one dog then the d1 will cover that, especially if its across the country.

smiles per gallon :rolleyes:110 , re-sale 110, longevity 110 , need i go farther?

I changed from D2 to a 110.

I loved my D2, but the 110 is just special. There's nothing else that comes close in my opinion. Yeah, it's not perfect, but it has a ton more character.

D2 was more comfortable, faster (in terms of comfortable cruising speed), but nowhere near as robust or flexible/practical. I no longer worry about air suspension letting me down too (sad, but I always did). I do worry about it getting nicked though!

It depends what you want to use it for.

If its for the added practicality the 110 would have over the Disco in terms of load carrying and low gearing for towing etc., then the choice may be obvious.

If you want a 110, " cause you,ve allways fancied one ", then you,ve really, really got to " want " it !, to compensate for the low equipment levals, poor driving position, noise and stopping it getting stolen.

The 110/90 is the " Iconic " shape of a " Landrover ", and, historically, a vehicle that is recognisable all over the world, with a reputation for being a robust, fixable off roader.

We have a Defender 90 and a D2, which are used on and off the farm. The 90 is a commercial which can carry more in the back and is better for towing animals.

The D2 is used in exactly the same situations, and I have found it struggling for traction in really wet tracks, which I put down to its extra wieght.

Personally, I look at the 2 in avery similar light, very good vehicles, that stand out from most of the other " boxes " on/off the road.

If you lay on your back and look under the Defender and the Discovery, they both look pretty similar !.

With the D2 you need a mortgage to run one, with the Defender, you need a mortgage to buy one !!!.

Helpful response, thanks.:) I'm building up a list of reasons why so I can convince my wife and running costs are at the top of her list. Trouble is, i'm a petrolhead and i just can't do without a V8:D. The D2 is PRINS LPG so it helps.

Just to swim against the flow here, my 110 was a PITA, yes it looked 'cool' but 19mpg on a 600 mile round trip isn't funny. It was deafening to drive and lacked power IMO, although I suspect there may have been a turbo fault. Yes it had space but to be honest so does my disco. WRT off road capability - the disco is capable.

They are not better or worse than each other - just different.

However, one comes with 'cred' but will cost you more.

IMHO:eek:

it really boils down to do you want a capable multi purpose family car or a no frills commercial vehicle

i use a disco 1 as a family car and for work.... was chatting to someone who does similar work yesterday about replacing his old ldv van.... he is now going to look at a 110.... wants more room in the back but has no need for family transport

I got a 1998 110 CSW, partly for the room for the dogs and kids, but mostly "just because I had always wanted one". I love it to bits, I am slowly teaching myself bits and pieces so it is cheaper to maintain, I get 30+ ish mpg on a run, and 25+ ish around town. The longest run I've done in a oner was 400+miles and I had no problem whatsoever with the comfort and i'm 6' 2" and over 17 stone, so hardly small. As has been said it's an icon and receives comments all the time, while the Disco may be a good and very capable motor it just isn't and never will be a 110.;);););)

I've had both and each has is merits. For both if you want comfort and the abilaty to hear the radio get a disco but lookafter it as the fookers rot like a mofo unless you waxoil it to death.
110 well have deep pockets for fuel or gas it
don't try to talk to any one as it is just no fun shouting for a long time (but there is always sound deadaning) and it will rot aswell anyone that thinks they don't look at your bulkhead or rear door and the fred flinstone floor is always fun.:D
But the big factor is what you want it for.
as for how they are in the green and brown stuff well depends more on the driver as thier is not that much that separats them
off road.
